Thinking about starting a website? Hosting questions?  Reply with quote

If you are working at making a profit on the web something you will definately want to consider is creating your own website.

A natural progress for many is to build a free website using one of the many services like Geocities or Freewebs. But eventually most realize that for a professional looking URL and more control over their webpages, like avoiding annoying popups and ads associated with free webpages, they need to learn about building their own website. It can be daunting at first, but it's not too hard taken a step at a time.

A first consideration is a domain name, and then where to obtain hosting for your new website and finally how to build your website.

We've created a new website to help you answer these questions...

The Web Hosting Forum

We've just started but are adding new information all the time, and we need your newbie questions about domain names, hosting services, and webmastering basics.

So if there is something related to starting your website that you would like to know then please visit and ask away!

Free websites  Reply with quote

There are a few free websites that do not have the pop-ups. There are also deals some time for a few years free, like the one they most recently had at www.1and1.com The site is great. I have three sites up there free for three years and one of them is a non-html site which I created myself from the web and it looks very professional. Just some info.

paid hosting is well worth it  Reply with quote

I agree with Andrew, when you are building a website that is for your business, you want it to be professional, and you will definitely want the reliability of a paid service. Keep in mind you're paying for the technical support as much as the web space, and there are a large number of hosts out there that offer 24/7 service, surely you will find one that can suit your needs. Feel free to contact me with any hosting questions as well.

I have been building websites for a couple years now. As a 'buyer' and surfer I am very turned off by free hosting. It makes the business appear unprofessional even if its not.

Honestly there are so many hosting companies now and they are so reasonably priced if you search, its silly not to invest in paid hosting.

I like free hosts just for promoting my sites by creating doorway pages to my main site. It gives you more Link Popularity as well as a better chance for higher placement.

Yes. They are getting strict. However I've had good success. I use a program that allows me to create the doorways using the main page of the site I'm promoting. You can't even tell that they're doorway pages. I use the index page as the template and then the software I use creates the doorway pages so they come out looking exactly like the main index page but each one optimized with a specific keyword phrase. So far, according to the success of this method, doorways are acceptable as long as...

a) the keyword phrases, descriptions, titles, etc... are 100% relivent to the site your promoting...

b) there are no redirects. Especially JavaScript redirects.

c) you do not submit them all one at a time. You must use the robots meta "Index,Follow"

d) the doorways design is consistant with the website you are promoting.

The software I use allows me to create a doorway template for 35 different search engine which allows me to optimize the doorways according to how each search engine gathers data from the page for ranking purposes.

I'll PM a link for the software to you if you like. It's a gem! I would post it here but I'm not sure what the rules are regarding posting links to commercial software.

Thanks!

Building a Website  Reply with quote

I learned to build a basic webpage about a year ago, using a free site. It was very basic, and had an annoying popup that appeared right in the middle of it. This was through geocities. It was useful for learning purposes. One day all my files disappeared from the file manager. I decided to ditch geocities and I looked for a site that didn't have popups. I thought I found one but it had a worse full page popup that kept appearing. At last I took the gurus' advice and bought my own domain name. The free site that I was using had a paid option as well so I decided to use it. it does me well. I have had a lot of fun improving my website as I have learned new things. I have even picked up a bit of html code on the way. I am also helping a friend in Montana build up and maintain her website as well. It may be daunting at first, but with MSFront Page I have found it well within my capabilities. I fully recommend doing it yourself. You will have fun and enjoyment and save hundreds, even thousands of dollars in the process. Have a go at it, you can't go far wrong.

Website building can be easy  Reply with quote

I started making websites about 6 months ago and the program I have is so easy. It guides you step by step through the process with no Html, just templates, images, forms and so much more. It's almost like doing a PowerPoint presentation. My site looks professional (from other's feedback Laughing ) and there are no pop ups. The program is Website Complete and I got it from GoDaddy. They also have really cheap hosting. Your image and presentation is everything when it comes to the internet and free sites sometimes don't cut it. I really recommend doing what I did, it's not that much and you can get great sites out of it. Feel free to get in touch with me for more info.

Take care and Always Dream BIG,
Dwight

Not heard that phrase in a longwhile - but certainly worth remembering everyday!
