Thinking of a PFP Masters Degree  Reply with quote

Hello,
I am about to graduate from Texas Tech with a B.A degree and I was contemplating getting a masters degree in Personal Financial Planning.
Texas Tech offers one of the only PFP Masters Program in Texas and I was wondering if this is a good route to take or if I should just study for the CFP Certification?
Can any professionals in this field shed some light on my question?

The best thing to do is to get certifications. A degree really doesn't mean much for financial planners and may actually show too narrow of a focus. I'd go for business admin with finance and focus on topics regarding investments, stocks and personal finances.

Corporate finance is a good thing to have under your belt as well so that you may connect the employee needs with that of how their employers finance their operations. A rounded knowledge of everything is best when it comes to any field, esp financial planning

cfp certification  Reply with quote

CFP certification is designed for professionals working in the Financial Planning sector. A Financial Planner or Personal Financial Planner is a practicing professional who helps people deal with various personal financial issues through proper planning, which includes but is not limited to areas such as cash flow management, retirement planning, investment planning, risk analysis and insurance.

Hi,

The personal financial planning major is a general course of study, emphasizing the traditional areas of financial planning and integrating the CFP Certification Professional Education Program courses. The personal financial planning major requires completion of 39 semester hours of credit 13 courses with an overall grade-point average of 3.0 B on a 4.0 scale.

If you have a mathematical disposition I would look into becoming a CFA, it will make you very marketable. If you are more into the sales side of the business I think that CFP is a good way to go. You should speak with the graduate director and ask about the placement of their graduates. Often times grad programs do little to help in the placement of their graduates.

Oops. I just looked at the date on the post and realized my comment is obviously irrelevant. Laughing

I would love to know what he decided to do!
