Credit Repair

There are many companies that claim to be able to repair your credit, the truth is that the shortcuts offered may make matters worse.

Not all credit repair companies are scams, but there are serious limits to what they will be able to achieve, and you may be able to get the same results for free by simply taking control of your own credit repair. But, if you do decide to pay for help, beware of companies that want you to pay up front, don't explain your rights and what steps you can take on your own, suggest applying for an Employer Identification Number to use instead of your Social Security Number, or otherwise advise you to take illegal steps. Legitimate companies can help you thru the process, facilitating the removal of incorrect or paid debts and handling debt disputes.

Take advantage of your right to a free copy of your credit report if you've been denied credit recently, and keep tabs on your credit report with your right to a yearly free report. There is little chance of having recent credit problems removed, but do dispute errors in your report in writing to the associated credit reporting agency. Start a repayment plan, and be sure to pay at least something to your debts each month and you'll be on the way to a better report. Consistent effort and repayment of debts will improve your credit report.
