What are some good books about watches?
posted by: williamhawk @ Sat Apr 29, 2017 7:11 am
The following books have been recommended by various people on the forum:
The Watch - Gene Stone
Revolution in Time - David S. Landes
Complete Price Guide to Watches - Tom Engle, Richard E. Gilbert, Cooksey Shugart
Wristwatch Annual 2009 - Peter Braun, Elizabeth Doerr (or whatever is the most recent year)
Another common suggestion is to find books on your favorite brands to get detailed information on that brand's history and watches.
please help.
Thanks.
I didn't find the right solution from the internet.

What are the best watch brands?
posted by: williamhawk @ Sat Apr 29, 2017 7:09 am
This greatly depends on your definition and criteria for "best". Do you mean best quality, best value for money, best brand recognition etc.? The brand generally considered to be the top brand is undoubtedly Patek Philippe. Rounding out the top three are Vacheron Constantine and Audemars Piquet. In his book The Watch, Gene Stone likens Patek Philippe to the King, Vacheron Constntine to the Queen and Audemars Piquet to the Prince. There is a recent thread that attempts to rank some of the better known watch brands.
please help.
Thanks.

I have an old vintage watch, what is it worth?
posted by: williamhawk @ Sat Apr 29, 2017 7:02 am
When asking for an estimated value of your watch, please remember 3 things:
We are giving you an opinion, not a formal appraisal. It may be based on recent selling prices of similar watches in similar conditions or on our best estimates based on experience. Please note that actual selling price is much different from an asking price. Just because you found one lunatic on Ebay asking $10,000 for his rusty old piece of junk doesn't mean that it is actually worth that much. I have seen many auctions end with no bids due to an unreasonable startin...

What is WIS?
posted by: williamhawk @ Sat Apr 29, 2017 6:56 am
WIS stands for Watch Idiot Savant. Some prefer Wife Is Screaming (when she finds you bought another watch) because it's a more accurate acronym. So how can you spot a WIS? A WIS:
Is someone who can be so distracted by his watch that he fails to note what time it is.
Wakes up in the emergency room and asks the nurse if his watch was scratched.
Spends $500 plus on polish equipment and materials and works 20 hours in order to refinish a $200 worth SS bracelet.
To see what sort of a WIS you might be, have a look at this thread talking about the...

Should I work less days to pursue my dream career?
posted by: Mkdude @ Thu Apr 27, 2017 2:38 pm
Hello everyone!

I am currently working five days a week and am growing weary of it. I want to be an author and have projects I am trying to work on, and with work, errands, social stuff, and numerous other obligations, they're moving along at a snail's pace at best. (Some weekends I make no progress at all on any of them!) I've cut all other stuff to a minimum, but still, it's not getting done fast enough, so I was thinking of working less to reclaim some time back for creativity and, well, just living. (We only live one life, right? Don't w...

Questions for Investors using (or not using) mobile apps
posted by: EyeOnMyStocks @ Tue Apr 25, 2017 9:32 pm
Hi guys. I developed an app called EyeOnMyStocks that was designed to help traders and investors passively track their portfolio and watch lists. It is completely free and has no ads and I was hoping to get some advice from you on how to make it better.

Currently it uses real time market data on the user’s portfolio to send notifications on:

· When a stock moves above or below a certain price
· When a stock moves more than a certain percent in a trading day
· Analyst upgrades & downgrades
· Ear...

advice for senior citizen?
posted by: emily1 @ Sun Apr 23, 2017 12:36 am
I am an 80yo senior and have my savings in the bank. One financial adviser at one of my banks suggested I invest in a very conservative investment with S&P Investment Advisory Services. Any opinions on this? I am concerned with the cost of living rising and hardly any interest on savings accounts that I could outlive my money altho I do have a decent SS and pension income. TIA for any suggestions.

This Will Seal The Fate Of Apple $AAPL
posted by: inthemoneystock @ Wed Apr 19, 2017 7:37 pm
Shares of Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) have been unable to bounce over the last few days, after pulling back from all-time highs. This chart formation is known as a bear flag. In addition, if you connect the recent lows of the last month (as seen in the chart below) you can clearly see a breakdown is taking place. This seals the fate of $AAPL in the near-term, a solid drop is coming. Investors should be short shares of Apple, looking for a downside long-term target of $121.50.
