It depends on what your marketing.
I'm more websurf then webmaster. I really should be getting more bannar adverts out.
There is a lot of competion online.
Traffic exchanges and forums are limiting in that many promote; but, don't check stuff out.
I've read that 10% of the population will buy stuff from spam.
But there are countries that have anti spam laws. So is it worth the risk to spam?
Is it illegal to telemarket Canada? In the USA you have to get on a list and get a copy of the no call list. It is just a pain.
I know some marketers do it claiming they are not telemarketers.
Hum, your calling me by phone; but, your not a telemarketer?
No I'm network marketer.
One time MBNA gave me $50 because they called me after 9PM. That was kind of cool. Got the call at 9:06PM asked to talk with a manager and got credited $50 to my account.

I have an online store with Ebay, and I market it with a chain of events.
First, most people online don't respond very well to anything that's not free.
So I offer them free leads and free money. When they accept, they enter a space with 60,000+ others looking for money and I have built a strong presence there, so they usually find me.
Then I send them to a blog with lots of good tips and information to help them do better, and a very few links to things that pay me. One of these links is to my online store with a personal description on why I think they need it. Since they know me and that I am a trusted advisor instead of just another salesman, I make sales.

Depending on what type of store you have, you should start thinking about writing articles or reviews on your products that you sell. You can then submit these for free to directories and you will get traffic to your website.
You can also setup a blog and pick one product that the blog will revolve around and add lots of fresh content to it daily and put links back to your website or store in the posts.
Other ways to market your online store would be to look around for forums that are related to your niche and start participating in them. Also use a signature in all of your outgoing e-mail

Well, the best way to market is through online marketing and some ground marketing. This can give you optimum results.

Every means possible that you can afford. PPC is a great way to get immediate traffic. Social media takes time but can also lead to targeted traffic. SEO takes much longer so start now so that you can benefit later. Look for complementary businesses on the web that don't compete with you but are somehow related and work deals to advertise on their sites. yada yada

It seems like people who limp into PPC with very little investment don't do too well. For AdWords, adding a few hundred keywords with <10 searches a month doesn't seem to convert that well for me.

Who would even bother going after a few hundred keyword phrases with <10 search/month?
The reason most people fail at PPC is that they generally don't know WTH they are doing. It's not just a matter of throwing up a few ads for a few hundred keywords, funding the campaign and sitting back and collecting the $$$. If it were that easy, everyone would be millionaires.
There is an art to organizing a good Adwords campaign... to organizing your keywords into the correct types of Ad Groups... to writing your ads... to buidling your landing pages... and then refining and refining... tsting and testing...
If you don't know how to do all of the above then find some company who does.

If you are serious about marketing online you'll need some resources.
Google these two terms
Bruce clay and enquiro
Enquiro has some great white papers and I suggest reading them. and bruce clay has some very good articles on SEO and SEM.
Making money on-line takes time.

There are different ways to close the loop between social media and offline action as we get better integrating social media into our overall marketing and communications plans. Think in both directions - offline to online and online to offline. And, remember it is important to track your tactics to see which ones work.

Think about Search Engine Optimization, you goal is to get the online store on more search engines. Apply descriptive store names and make the content relevant to users. Ensure providing page title, meta tags and be consistent.
You can also try social networking like facebook, myspace, digg etc to distribute your listings along with in Existence on discussion boards.

have you tried creating a facebook page for your store? you can tag your friends with the photos of your products, the photos would be visible to their wall and their friends would see those products you might find customers by doing these.

Marketing is the process of performing market research, selling products and/or services to customers and promoting them via advertising to further enhance sales. It generates the strategy that underlies sales techniques, business communication, and business developments. It is an integrated process through which companies build strong customer relationships and creates value for their customers and for themselves.
