Moon & Mars  Reply with quote

NASA will return to the moon by 2020 and build a permanent base by 2024. The base will be at the moon's south pole because it is sunlit three-quarters of the time. Solar energy can be used. The plan is for crews to eventually stay on the moon for periods of 6 months. It will be an international effort, with Europe, Russia and Japan. The mission goal is to set the stage for going to Mars. In 1980, I thought we would be on Mars in my lifetime. It will probably not happen. Space exploration is long term. It involves the whole human species. It may be the 22nd century before men walk on Mars.

I really can't see it being the 22nd century though.

I don't think it will take that long. Besides, none of those countries may still exsist in the 22nd century. I hope they will, but you never know what will happen over a hundred year period.

I think very drastic will happen to the US economy before the 22nd century.

NASA fell to the interests of defense contractors. They have ZERO incentive to pursue space exploration and development.

The moment NASA accomplished their goal of humiliating Russian space attempts, NASA curled up and died.

Don't take my word for this. Ask yourself : wtf has NASA done for the past 25 years? Does it look remotely like anything one could call "exploration"? Or even "Development"?

If a monopolist bureaucracy like NASA can't handle the job, then it falls to the private sector to get the job done. But why would the private sector care? They'll get busy the day the public shows concern.

The public must educate the market as to the importance of space exploration and development. Only THEN will the privates compete to attain goals in space.

So it's the public that must drive this. But look around. Literally nobody gives a fryin' shit. Neocons want eternal war profits. Liberals are occupied with getting us out of the genocidal fascism of the neocons. And then look what captures the mass attention: American ****** Idol.

How many elementary kids do you personally know that are pumped about science and math? How many of them are engaged in a project? LOL

America doesn't get space because America doesn't DESERVE space. Our fate lies in the sand, not in space.

I do think that NASA are spending their money on superfluous assignments. I mean, Mercury and Venus... wtf? The moon, ok, it's close and relatively cheap... but all the money on these lifeless planets is nothing but a waist.

We are faced with overpopulation... according to recent statistics, your third child costs the environment the equivilent of 1000 return air flights to America from London. No joke.

So shouldn't we be looking to advanced propultion and ways of adapting to environments we have discovered in distant space that, although might not be identical to earth, but do have an atmosphere, running water and thus fall within the habitable zone ~ at least?

I think it is a good time to make real estate investment on the moon as there is no formal government there u can have the benefit of zero taxation. For investment advise in moon mars or outer universe, there may already be some good estate agents.

We might walk on Mars this century.

I know for a fact that the US military are researching positronium propultion which is ridiculously powerful.

I have a good feeling about the next 15 years... if we don't get to Mars, at least something great space-wise will happen.

Yea(on the waist of money issue), perhpas they should have reformed health care then we wouldn't be fighting about health care now.

And I guess another yea on over population. Perhpas we should ban flu shots. Flu a good random way to off some people. Perhpas we need another spanish flu.
Of course if it proves safe I plan on getting my kid vacinated for H1N1.. Going to skip seasonal flu for him though.

Logan's Run could probably be redone.

Technology is advancing a lot. We made vehicles. We made planes and helicopters. Men have walked on the moon. I hope I'm alive to see men walk on Mars. Or another planet in our galaxy.

Can't wait to see them make a space station on the moon, gonna be pretty sweet! Very Happy

Also, it won't be long before another life supporting planet is confirmed.

Gliese 581 is a hot spot at the moment as it has a couple of planets orbiting it that are well within the 'habitable orbit/zone' and displaying suitable properties for supporting life.

And before you all get worried, no, an alien invasion from an overwhelimingly advanced alien race is not a general probability in rational astrophysics.

Trust me, I've studied it. Wink

I'm one of those people who believe that it has already happened and the "elite", through the governments around the world have just not shared that information with us.

Call me a "conspiracy theorist", but come on, it's 2009... we really haven't made contact with ANY life out there, and have really not traveled past the moon? It seems absurd to believe that, and there is a lot of supporting documentation, evidence, and eyewitness accounts if you just search for it online.

Cutting edge is Old News. We have WAY MORE technology than our "leaders" and the "elite" will ever let us know about.

Think about it.
