Hey Coaster
Well, imo individual stocks as well as sectors or funds each have their own price movement. Therefore, you will find one particular trading method works better on some than others. Simply find-out exactly what sector or fund works better with the trading method you use, and stick with them and only them.
There's no such thing as one trading method working for all sectors or funds, imo ...
Master one stock sector or fund or currency for each has the potential of generating great returns.

It's not you...certain sectors do better at certain times in the market cycle or different climates.
Warren Buffett said, "A boat rises and falls with the tide." Even good stocks will drop in an underperforming sector. Bill O'Neil emphasises and tracks sectors/industry groups for this reason.

I used to...I've been on vacation hold for about a year now and will resume shortly...gotta see if I can convert to electronic version 'cos the mail here sucks.
I do like the industry group tracking and would like to find a free electronic equivalent.

To answer the original question:
Gold/Precious metals/minerals
Energy (which I think is about finished)
International/Emerging Markets
Those are all my sectors and I make it a point to be in the top sectors completely.

Tim,
I am an investing newbie - but have been reading a lot recently trying to educate myself. One thing I noticed from your post is that it seems you are so diversified between sectors that perhaps your performance is mirroring the S&P 500. Could it be possible that your poorly performing sectors are inline with the business/market cycle and your returns are average to your peers?
My 2 cents.

Tim that's an interesting strategy. I wish I was at a point I could make educated decisions to which sectors invest. Recently however I sold out of my active managed fund and switched to an index. I've seen the average active fund performance vs. S&P Index (after fees and taxes) so for an inexperienced investor I hope it's the right choice.
However, I would like to eventually find indexes or low-cost funds which mirror sectors. Do you put much stock (if any) in these business cycle models? It almost seems too easy if they worked but then again common sense goes a long way...

In a market like we have experienced since your original post in this thread, sector advantage or any concept of orderly rotation has been destroyed. Literally EVERYTHING has been down, prompting the financial commentators to wonder if capital was being withdrawn from the market and stuffed into matresses instead.
Good leg up today, though, 6/15. If you kept some of your ammo dry for picking up bargains, and you bought boldly at the recent lows, you stand to be rewarded.
