Illegal Immigration |

I'm sick of it.
Come Monday, I'll be doing my own protesting. From Monday forward, my business will refuse service to any illegals. Sure, being in an IT business I probably don't have much of an illegals client base, but it's for the principal.

quote: Originally posted by coaster I'm pretty lenient on immigration. As long as they do it legally, find a job, pay taxes, don't use social services until they've paid taxes, and learn English.
BUT......I'm in a snit about the Spanish "National Anthem" that's getting press attention lately. A Spanish-language translation of the Star Spangled Banner was recorded and is being played on Spanish radio stations. Hey, if they want to translate the Star Spangled Banner and sing it in Spanish, that's fine. But DON'T call it the National Anthem. The National Anthem is the English text authored by Francis Scott Key and designated by Congress as the U.S. National Anthem. If they want to sing the National Anthem, sing it in English!!
Oh I'm perfectly fine with legal immigration, but all the others I think I'll spit on the ground when I see them from now on.

Isn't America the land of the immigrants including the "illegal" ones?

It's not that they are immigrants, it's that they are not going through the proper motions of obtaining citizenship nor do they care to adopt the society of this country (instead they want to change it for their benefit only).
My girlfriends grandparents were Mexican. They came over legally and went through the entire process. They worked hard and paid their taxes, and finally were able to live a comfortable life.
My girlfriend says it's a slap in the face to her grandparents what the illegal immigrants are doing, that he would turn in his grave if he knew all these bastards are circumventing what he had to go through as well as the political system letting these people do it.

quote: Originally posted by coaster Yes, America is the land of immigrants. It's also the great "melting pot" -- i.e. immigrants who adopted the new society as their own. Recently we've had a trend toward multicultural diversity -- where immigrants tend to keep to themselves and their own ways and culture, and don't integrate into the society in which they live. Since we're all descended from immigrants here (Native Americans excepted) I think we who have melted into the pot find that trend undesirable. Perhaps the antagonism toward illegal immigrants is, in part, an expression of that feeling. Because of their illegal status, they are least likely to integrate into society.
But does "melting into the pot" require any immigrant to forget/ignore about the culture and values that they inherited from their original societies?.
