AdSense vs YPN |

Most webmasters interested in web earning are already familiar with Google's nearly omnipresent ad system called AdSense, but there is a new contextual text advertising revenue game in town these days going by the name Yahoo! Publisher Network, aka YPN.
YPN is currently in Beta, and not open to the general webmaster public, but they are currently taking applications for consideration of acceptance into the Beta program...
YPN Application
The ad inventory comes from the venerable old Overture network, which was recently rebranded into Yahoo! Search Marketing. This means that there is a solid network of advertisers to draw from for display in YPN, which is good news for publishers. The more advertisers clamoring for a finite ad space, the more that advertising is likely to pay.
I've been playing around with the new YPN system for a little while and thought I would share some of the things that I've learned so far.
First of all, the system is in Beta, so rough spots and bugs shouldn't be too suprising at this stage. I expected that the admin interface might be a bit clunky, especially compared to AdSense, since the YSM interface isn't that great, but suprisingly it seems to be done nicely.
I can't go into as much detail as I would like due to certain restrictions of the contract, but I can certainly say, as has been widely reported elsewhere, that the cost per click (CPC) of this system tends to be much higher than AdSense. But on the otherhand, the click thru rate (CTR) is lower, which appears to be due to targeting that hasn't reached AdSense's level. But, in YPN's favor, it has done a better job than AdSense on one particular website of mine on which AdSense was displaying Ford truck and industrial part ads on pages which were about anything but those.
There is currently no support for image ads, only text ads. Channel reporting is available, but not for the current day. URL blocking is also available for competitive ads, etc. Another feature that has long been requested for AdSense/AdWords, is the ability to use earnings from YPN on YSM in order to pay for advertising fees with pubisher profits. One important tip if you plan to take advantage of this feature, is that your login ID should be the same on both YPN and YSM for this to work (at this time).
I believe this new system has a great start and holds great promise. And I, along with many others, are happy to see a viable potential new alternative to AdSense.
