Deployed and trying to fix my credit |

Hello everyone. I am new to the board and have some questions (wow, imagine that! )
As you may have guessed, I am deployed right now in Iraq. I have had bad credit since I was younger and entered the Army back in 1998. Here is a brief snapshot of my credit:
I have been married and divorced twice (same woman). While I was married, I had a lot of things charged up. When I got divorced the first time, the judge ruled that I assume ALL debt and pay a sky high child support for my daughter (apx $600 a month). I could not control all the finances at the time and I had 4 vechicals and my ex-wife would not take a single one because she wanted to drown me out with bad credit. I surrendered the two most expensive ones, a motorcycle (that I miss GREATLY) and a Grand Prix GTP. I have apx $28,000 in collection debt and about $2,000.00 in debt that I have kept current and am paying off during this deployment.
I am trying to get my credit fixed so in Jan of 2007, I will be able to get a VA loan and comfortably afford a $150,000 house with land. I want to know where to start. Today I pulled my credit from the three major credit companies (cost $25) and saw everything that is hurting me. I have a lot of "charged off's" and "sold to creditors" from 2000 on up. A couple of them I have disputed because I was never notified or anything of the outstanding amount left on the account.
So, what this is all coming to is this question..... should I leave those "as is" or work it out with the company to pay it off and hopefully have it show that I am paid off and in good standing. Some of the charged off accounts are still hurting me today. They had been on my credit for 3 or 4 years.
I hope I have not lost anyone. It's kind of hard for me to explain everything, but I am slowly learning. I would prefer to do this myself so I can get a better understanding of how this works so I can help out other soldiers with the same problems. I am wanting to take action for my mistakes over the years and fix what I have messed up. Is there hope for that?
Thank you for your help and time you guys.
Sincerely,
SGT Travis Bennett

I do understand your problem. I have been working on cleaning up my reports as well. I would suggest you continue to challenge the items that you know are clear. If there are other item you can contact the companies and make arrangements. Personally what I have done is set up a payment plan thru Consuner Credit Councilors and as the items are paid the creditor are deleting. I am also using a credit repair company that is challenging the items for me. I was doing it myself and found that the credit bureaus were slower to act because they considered my issues "frivilous". Good luck it will take time but it can be done.
