Adults' Dumbest Money Moves  Reply with quote

quote:
How many really stupid things have you done with your money? Probably not many, if you're fourteen or eighteen years old. But your parents have been around longer. Your aunts and uncles. Your grandparents. Their friends. They've lived for decades. They've had a tons of time to blow it a few times, to make poor decisions about their money. Even Warren Buffett and Bill Gates can share some doozies with their kids.

That's right, your adult friends and family members have likely slapped their foreheads and shouted, "Doh!" numerous times. No matter how smart, no matter how successful, adults make financial mistakes. But remember - few of them were ever taught anything about money management or investing when they were young. Neraly all of them had to wing it.

You've got a significant advantage over them. So learn from them now.

Here's an interesting exercise. Pick four adults. (Heck, pick thirty - you'll learn even more!) How about one of your parents, one or two of your teachers, and the owner of the corner market? Ask them what one or two of their dumbest investments or money moves have been. For a long time in this country, there was a natural resistance to talking about money. This has contributed to our great ignorance. So begin now. Ask questions. Don't ask specifically how much money someone made or lost. But do ask them for lessons.

If they seem too embarrased to admit to any, remind them that their pain will be yoru gain, that they'll be sparing someone else from making the same mistakes - in other words, point out how exceedingly generous they'll be. And make sure you also ask some adults you consider to be very sucessful - you'll find that everyone has at least a few regrettable moves. Record your findings for future reference.

I read the book a little while ago and never got around to finishing this little assignment in the book. So, what were your financial blunders?

Getting gready with Dorchester was a mistake. Had it all figured out. I was going to buy at 18 and sell at 20. The think had resistance at 20. So should have bought it back or never sold it. The thing is at 23 now. I missed out on about $800 dollars of gains plus several divend checks.

Also not selling Corning when it went down $7 in one day on high volume. Thought that was a over reaction and that I would sell it a tad higher. The thing went lower and lower and lower. Eventually under $2 a share. Held it until it got back up to $11. I was so tempted to buy more when it was cheap!!!

I bought to early and sold to late. Should have bought more when it became a bargan.

And when I was in college thinking I would get me a good job out of the shoot I was to liberal with credit cards.

And for that natural resistance to taking about money. My wife is a CPA and she does not like to talk about it.

Her area of intrest is about control and those types of accounting principles.

My first real job was working on software for NASA in Clear Lake, about a 30 minute drive from the center of Houston. I wanted to be able to call my parents and other places in town without it being a "long-distance" charge, so I paid extra each month for a phone company service that made them not be long-distance calls. After several years I wound-up moving back into Houston proper, but it took a good while before I realized that the phone company was still charging me for this service, even though it could no longer save me a penny. It was costing me each month, for nothing! Lesson, keep an eye on your bills, and look for "extra" charges and remove services you no longer need.

Buying a time share.

Not a totall bad deal but I could have gotten them down more then what I did.

I hear they can be purchaced real cheap on Ebay.

Bought in on my honney moon and the wife is happy with it so it is not a total bad purchace.

But as a guy I like to get a deal and was happy with how much they did discount at the time.

But to get a real deal I think you need to buy from someone who has buyers remorce. Then again they may not want to go lower then what they paid. So if they over paid . . . .

Anyway, we banked our first year. Yep paid for something we did not use.

So apart from it making the wife happy that I have agreed to go on vacations every year the time share may not have been a real great financial manover.

Yes monitor your bills especially phone/cell phone bills along with cable and internet... shop around you might be able to get a better deal or cutoff services that you dont need.

Anyone who relies on Social Security. I don't expect it to be there for me. I'm just hoping it is still there for my parents.

Also paying for a website--

Pre Pail Legal's "Free" website

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When I got online years and years ago. 1998 or 1999 I don't recall but it was before 2000.

Anyway I was all excited to join PPL and recruit. My upline told me I would get a "free" website which I spent hours and hours promoting.

Then a uncle of mine asked why I had not responded to his request for info on PPL.

Well I found out if you just have a "free" site your leads go to the nearest member of the sign up with a paid website!!!!!

Then I let the upline manipulate me into paying for a site. That is how they get you. Your not serious about your busisness unless you get ripped off on a site.
