You will want to be conservative with much of you money, however, with an amount like that I cannot help but think that you could do very well in the forex market. Whether you learn to trade on your own, with some time and dedication, or find one of the many good traders that exist, it is up to you. I simply do not think money can be made anywhere else in the world like it can with the forex market.

Stock market (including trading options and index futures) and commodity futures (including option on futures) are fantastic instruments to grow your money in a way much respectable. But remember always: money management (ie also risk management) is the most important element to grasp regardless where you are going to invest. All investment comes with risks.

Depending on your length of stay in the US, I would buy a house or condo and then invest the rest between stocks, money markets, etc.
You have alot of options with this kind of money, but I would definitely research how your citzenship status effects your taxes. Maybe someone here knows more about investing while on foreign soil?

No reason to think it won't...of course it is a risk but no risk equals no reward...unless you happen onto the very rare no risk big reward option.
