World of Warcraft, or WOW for short, is a very popular online role playing game, that has attracted over five million players around the globe. Players enter the virtual world of Azeroth and can engauge in quests, battles and other activities fighting and working with other game players.
Like most role playing games there is a currency, in this case virtual Gold which can be exchanged for supplies, armour and fancier weapons. Players who don't have enough Gold to purchase their desired virtual items may choose to take a shortcut in earning their virtual Gold and use real-world cash to purchase virtual Gold for their characters though one of the many WOW Gold currency services.
Some companies with access to dirt cheap labor have realized that they can make a profit selling virtual Gold. They pay workers to enter the virtual WOW world and fight monsters for their virtual treasure in order to earn Gold on a continuous basis, which is sold to players on an open market. This practice is officially frowned upon by the maker of the game, but little is done to stop the practice. So, the net result is that Chinese workers are paid a pittance to manage multiple game characters day after day, "harvesting" Gold for their employer in a new kind of sweatshop.
