Revisiting Emotional Wealth Building 101 by Tobin Smith

While I'm in Provence traveling with a group of old friends from grade school and new friends I've met over the last few years, let me deviate from lessons I've learned about better portfolio management to lessons I've learned about living a richer, more fulfilling and satisfying life.

Yes ladies and gentlemen, it�s time to once again visit the land of emotional asset management.

For you newbies, I've been writing a book on a philosophy I call �Emotional Wealth.� The idea of emotional assets and emotional asset management is simple. I have an hypothesis about building the most successful life possible: It is to expend similar amounts of time and energy actively managing my emotional assets -- the non-financial assets in life that pay me emotional dividends like joy, laughter, unconditional love and excitement -- as I do in managing my financial assets.

I've learned one simple and immutable truth over the last 30 or so years: success in life is of course NOT measured by the quality and amount of financial assets that we acquire, but in the quality and amount of emotional assets -- the people, passions and rewarding experiences that we acquire -- that bring us the joy that adds genuine value to life.

My discovery (if you will) in this regard was that the concepts, skills, principles and experience I�ve learned over the years that improved my financial asset management can, and should, be applied to the management of my emotional assets. If you are a proficient manager of your financial assets, you possess everything you need to be able to live an emotionally rich life.

In fact, virtually every portfolio management term or strategy I've learned that helps me grow or preserve my financial assets also has direct application for my personal life, as well.
