Fan Webpage, legal rights??  Reply with quote

Hello, this is a question about internet law Very Happy .

I currently own a fan webpage of star wars (yea I love those dam movies Razz ). For around 6 months I've ben working on this webpage, with info about the movies (character info, actors, special effect, storyline, etc).

I was thinking of maybe adding a few google adds into it, or some sort of advertising: this is for the only purpose of sustaining the costs of the webpage (the monthly web hosting $ ), that I m paying out of my own pocket.

I was wondering if there is some kind of law, or permission to do this, since I ve heard awfull stories about internet. Or if i can do it without any problem Very Happy.

I just don't want to get in trouble, specially for a webpage I do as a resource for fans

Thanks, coaster.

Hi Vashj,

This issue seems to have two major components:

Using the copyrighted characters and images on your page is the main legal issue, it seems to me. But don't get too worried, there are a million Star Wars fan sites and I've never heard any complaints concerning the owner of these copyrights going after fansites. Technically they might need to be licensed, but this kind of thing is usually only a concern for companies wanting to sell items using the characters and names. Paying fancy lawyers to go after fan sites doesn't usually happen, although technically it could. In some cases, like Neopets, for example, the parent company is very strict about using their protected images and characters, and they actively advise their users not to do it on their fansites. But with Star Wars you are probably pretty safe. This is just my humble opinion.

The second part of your issue was wanting to use AdSense on your pages. I don't think this will add any additional risk or liability to your situation. If Lucas Films, or whoever owns the rights to Star Wars stuff hypothetically did care about your site, it would be because of the first issue, and not the AdSense. And as far as Google is concerned, they are not going to cause you any problems as long as you remain within the AdSense Terms of Service.

Good luck with it!
