What do you tell your children about money and work?
I want to know because so many of the children I know do not see a connection between the two. They believe that someone else will take care of things, whether it's Mom and Dad or Uncle Sam, so why should they be concerned.

Moon Pie:
It is important to let your children know from the start that life is not a free ride. Even if you could afford to give everything to them, it is not wise to do that. Let children learn the value of money by having them earn what they want. Simple household chores could be given a value. Once the child has accomplished so many chores, they could be rewarded by giving them a monetary reward or purchasing what they wanted, once they were able to earn the cost of the item. My childhood was not easy (as most of the members here will say the same thing). It is not the right thing to go in the opposite extreme and give everything to your children. They will start to think that they will get everything they want without expending any effort. Do your children a favor and let them feel what it is like to work for what you want. They will appreciate the things they get more if they know they worked hard to obtain them. We have two grown sons, and even though we gave them many things, they also had to obtain some things through their own efforts. Hope this helps you.

Oh no! They're LIBERALS!
Without knowing their age...have them volunteer at shelters.
If you were their parent...I would say...stop giving them stuff (like food) for free. I think they'll see the connection when they want a sammich.

The kids I am talking about are often already at the shelters. I think that their ideas about cause and effect are warped. I think they get the ideas from what they see and from the "adults" in their lives. This is a growing portion of the population of the US.

Every parent wants to see their kid happy and not sad. But to what extent can the happiness last? Spoling them will make them beleive they can get anything they want. But does it really?
I personally believe no kid should get a car for his 16 birthday. If they do, it should be at least 10 years old and have the possibility of breaking down in the middle of the road. Why? Cause you need to push everyonce in awhile.
I understand that the upper class doesn't agree with me. If a beater is sitting next to a Benz in the driveway, it doesn't look good. But if you ask me, it looks beautiful. We obviously know who it belongs to and we know why.
I believe a car is the best to teach your child about money. Make sure they get a pretty darn sucky one and show them what it means to work on it and maintain it. Push them if you have to. Make them fill up the tank. Make them pay for insurance. A car, IMO, is the worst investment. If you show them the worst investment as they enter adulthood, I'm sure they'll get the idea.
As for younger kids that like to grab snacks and candies at supermarket and throws fit when they don't get it, I say you let them throw the fit. It's normal. I've never ever looked at a mother who didn't buy her child a candy bar and say, "wow. she's a horrible parent." Giving your kids everything seriously gets them to believe somebody is going to give it to them for the rest of their life.
We all know people that are spoiled. The same rules apply to that. They were given everything they wanted and wa-la. They suck at life.

knowlege is power (when it's withheld) that's why they dont teach econimics in american public schools now.
the idea is to loot the rugrats social security. in this econemy we cant both retire and and allow our children to to become successfull. this 'y' generation is pretty sharp. and they dont deserve any breaks. if we are to take a cue from the baby boomers, we must keep them ignorant and under subjection. diversion is a key. sports. video games. anything but economics keep them from economics.
