Two books I would recommend are Bogle On Mutual Funds written by John Bogle and Debt Proof Living by Mary Hunt.
Bogle will give you sound investing advice and Hunt will show you how to stay out of debt and have money left to invest.

For a very good introduction to index fund investing, read some of Jonathan Clements books (he writes the excellent "getting going" column in the WSJ).
I also really like David Benjamin's "LifeLong Investing" series - <deleted>. He takes a clear step-by-step approach to show you how to build a solid sustainable portfolio using index funds.
