OH YEAH! I'd MUCH rather be on hold for an hour OR BETTER STILL, take time off to go wait in a gubamint office for three hours!

Perhaps if they didn't put so many restrictions on the free stuff, they would hit their 2007 benchmark. Until it is free, I will still mail my printout.

I have been using a free IRS filer last 2 or 3 years (TaxAct). I first download the PDF fillout forms/docs from IRS, figure it out myself, then do it online. If it agrees (which it always does), I am set.

State of IL is always a no brainer, deduction per person (no itemized deductions), flat rate, then property tax deduction. They have their own electronic filing.

But now instead of direct deposit refunds, I am doing gradual IRA to Roth IRA conversions (reduced W-4 exemptions to "almost" cover it). So since I have to pay, I will likely mail forms/checks near the deadline. But maybe I can siill electronically file, and mail the electronic fom w/check.

The freebie can be a good deal for many especially if your tax return is simple. It can be a pain and big waste of time if someone has sufficient income to bounce them because of a vendors requirements. It is possible to be bounced from one vendor to another and still not qualify. There are many inexpensive online programs for the rest of the world. Be aware the IRS has changed definitons on a Qualifing Child which complicates many returns.
