Getting someone to pay you back  Reply with quote

Someone owes me some money, and I always have a hard time bringing it up and ironing out precise terms. It's not something I can go to court over, and the guy is probably broke but usually resourceful. How do I get him to get me back this money?

P.S. - No physical threats, just what can I say to trick that person into wanting to pay me back?

I know what I would try if they have an Internet connection. I ask them if I would set them up with something they can earn with, would they put the money toward the debt until it's paid off. The beauty is, if they accept I won't have to loan them anything next time, they'll know how to get it on their own.

Warren's got good advice. Give a man a fish.... vs. teach a man to fish.....

It sounds like your problem is lending money to a friend or relative, since you say it's hard to bring it up. Frankly, I think that when you lend money to a friend or relative you might as well kiss it goodbye. If you get paid back, fine, but if not, the only way to get it back is to give up your friendship. And you can't give up a relative. I know that's not helpful in answering your question, other than to evaluate what this person means to you and whether you really want to be trying to get it back at all.

I agree w/ Coaster... say goodbye to any money you let people borrow. A relative of mine has yet to pay back thousands to my parents, but they have accepted the fact that they'll never see it again. It's hard sometimes though when the relatives go on nice trips or buy nice things now that they can afford to, yet for some reason have hesitated on paying the 'rents back. Lending money= money you'll never see again. If you're in real need of the dough, just be honest w/ the person and hopefully they'll get the enormous hint and give you the money back.
