Invest in skills  Reply with quote

It suddenly occurred to me that the best thing I did before I retired was to learn a few skills that I could freelance with and pick up extra money in my spare time.

Who wants to be retired and run a full time business? Not me, I put my time in doing that and now I want to be footloose and fancy free, ready to take a trip on a moments notice and drop whatever I'm doing with no consequences.

I'm not saying you should learn the same skills I did, but find something people are willing to pay you for on a per job basis as completed. In my case it's PC troubleshooting and maintenance and website design and hosting. I pick up a few hundred extra dollars every month and have been doing it six years since I retired.

Investing in yourself is always good advice. Always look to learn something new and increase your skills. Challenge you mind or you'll lose it!

I agree. Anyway, no one can retire doing nothing. Life will be meaningless. Having a skill that can earn you some money as and when you want while enjoying your retirement certainly looks good. It is something worth considering as part of the retirement planning.

Ditto that. I am in my 40s and not retired yet, but a few years back i began freelance copywriting and i hope and plan to continue doing that after I offically retire from my full-time job as i find it easy to do and can make my own hours and work from home too.

The extra money i make makes a big difference in my general budgeting.
