The Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS) was established by the Department of Social and Family Affairs to address the problems of moneylending and indebtedness. It is funded by the Department and is now available in 55 centres throughout the country. The service is independent, free and confidential.
Each service is managed by a Board of Directors drawn from local voluntary and statutory bodies such as:
Society of St. Vincent de Paul
Community Welfare Service
Department of Social and Family Affairs
Credit Unions
Local Authorities
Citizens Information Centres
other Voluntary and Community organisations
The key features of the Programme include:
an approach which targets families who have been identified as having particular problems with debt and moneylending, particularly those families who depend on social welfare or who are on low incomes
an emphasis in the work of the projects on practical, budget-based measures that will have success in removing people permanently from dependence on moneylenders and in opening up an alternative source of low cost credit through the local credit unions.
a general money advice and education element for the local community including publication of information on money management and debt counselling
a co-ordinated structure, which allows for different approaches in local communities in relation to debt management and money advice and arrangements for sharing of experiences and information
ongoing evaluation of the work of the Programme.
