A country's currency swings in valuation when compared to other countries currencies. These valuations change daily. Much of it depends on economic factors and the perceived ability for a country to pay its debts.

The bonds I have are in US dollars and our local currency, invested in local and multinational conpanies. My way of diversifying the bond aspect of my portfolio. I'm tempted to buy some Australian bonds in Aussie dollars, since their interest rates are high, and there is a possible upswing in aussie dollars relative to the USD.

What do you guys think?

What are your thoughts on why the AUD would gain against the USD?

Australia more or less is a big exporter of commodities and minerals. Right now, there is a slow down in global business, but once the US and EU regain their footing, or at the very least stabilize, then the machines and manufacturing will once again pick up in China, India, vietnam, and many other countries. Whether for export, or for deliberate local consumption. And so, demand for raw materials will pick up again. I think the Australian government will have less need to cheapen their currency, since commodities are traded in USD. And so, unlike manufacturing exporting countries, would not need currency control.

The unique thing about China, IMHO, is that there is a distinct singlemindedness. Because of the centralized government, whatever Hu Jintao says, goes. Presently, China cannot slowdown too much. And the govt is finding ways to keep the economy growing. So, now the focus is less in export and more local consumption. They are using their humongous warchest to make people dip into their savings and SPEND.
