| *Help* Bank Account Trouble :!: |
|
|
This summer I came home to my family for a couple of months. My mother needed a bank account because she couldnt open up her own and she had gotten in some kind of trouble on her accounts so I let her on mine. It seemed simple. I use the money in Savings, she uses the money of hers in Checkings. One month later I check online and see that the accounts together are negative $2000.00. I have $1000.00 in checks sitting in my drawer because I cant use that bank account . It seems like because I am in debt because of my mom writing terrible checks in my name, I cant open a new account. I am a college student pissed off. I dont know what to do. Can someone help me?

I hope you've taken away all the checks and debit cards from your mother. You might even need to freeze the account. And explain the situation to the bank. Perhaps something can be worked out for you to pay back the money over time, like it had been a loan. If you do nothing, it will be a bad mark on your credit.
Frankly, your mother took advantage of you and misused you very sorely; I think I'd take her to small claims court. If you get a judgment, you can put a lien on anything she owns and garnish her wages until you're paid back.
I hope this is a lesson, not only to you, but to anyone who reads this that when it comes to family, you don't throw financial prudence and responsibility out the window just because they're family.
