I didn't see these mentioned but I think I wouldn't have made a lot of the SEO progress I've had so far without these tools. One speaker at an SEO seminar said if he had to choose to use one tool, it would be Open Site Explorer (.org). With this, you can see your competitor's backlinks, anchor texts and more. Plus you can see your own, which is helpful. You can export something like 1,000 backlinks into an excel sheet, which is great. From looking at the URLs, you can usually tell (with practice), which links are paid, which are blog comments, link exchanges, etc.

With that info, you can go out and see which links you can get too. The other thing I would suggest is the link assistant suite package (link-assistant.com). They have free and paid versions and this package has a lot of powerful stuff.

There are a ton of SEO tools out there but these are the ones I really like. TopSEOS website has a ranking system of SEO tools and services as well.

Thanks for sharing these links. Are they for free? I have been wanting to try my hand on SEO, and I never thought about needing any tools to help me. Now I know why some SEO experts have it easy.

Here's a nice site for checking your rankings. (I'm a customer, but have no other business relationship with this company, and don't know the owner personally.)

http://SheerSEO.com

To play the role of devil's advocate, there may be way too much emphasis on SEO and SEO tools among webmasters. Most of what we need to know can be explained in a single article.

To play the role of devil's advocate, there may be way too much emphasis on looking on the Net for the secrets to success.

A month at the beach could be a great investment, if it clears our mind of clutter, and helps us come up with one of those kind of ideas that catches on like wildfire.

If we can engage the passion of web users, they'll create the links we need, and we won't really have to worry about SEO. There's no way a single person can compete with a competitor who has the enthusiastic support of thousands of fans.

This is very challenging of course, and can be impossible if we're bogged down in the details of the SEO rat race.

Focus on rising up out of the vast endless ocean of web publishing mediocrity, to become one of those rare sites folks tell their friends about.

Being in the online webcontent thingie, I think AMA or http://www.articlemarketingautomation.com/
is one of the effective content marketing tools online. It is easy to use too. Even begginers can easily use it smoothly even on day1. Try it though.

Even with all these tools, SEO is not easy. You still need to know the underlying factors that drive SEO...it's not enough to get together some tools and resources and think you can create an effective SEO campaign. Do some research and understand that it takes time to a) learn correct/most effective SEO methods and b) implement them in an effective way. Only then does SEO appear to be easy, but it's never just a walk in the park.

Alexa Traffic rank tool bar is a tool I use to monitor how my site is doing.

For instance this site has a traffic rank of 110,384 with 138 sites linking into.

SEO depends on on-page as well as off-page optimization. With on page keyword and high quality contents are more essential and with off page link-building, article and directory submission, forum commenting, posting the blogs and bookmarking is important.

Just found this site on a tip:
http://www.socengine.com/seo/tools.php

With a very nice Sandbox Detection Tool and Keyword Difficulty Tool.

I very much enjoy
http://www.urltrends.com
for an attractive complete overview of your web presence.

And this is a easy simple PR check tool you can cut and paste lists into quickly

As my bookmarks are scattered I will pass along some others from time to time. Anyone with useful and unique tools please post them.

Lets try to compile a quality variety of different useful tools.

Lets stick to online tools in this thread and not push software, So this thread itself can be a useful one stop SEO tool in itself.

This thread will double nicely as an optimized page for seo tools

Thanks for this list!! As a newbie, this thread is a really good place to start.

You can find a lot of ranking checkers over the net but after reviewing the posts made on the Google site ad blog, you would notice that manual ranking checking could be the recommended option because Google in most cases does not like some scripts connecting to its databases and accessing the data.
