While most of the bills can be paid from a 529 college savings account, a couple thousand dollars in expenses will not qualify.

FYI - (I know Dave knows this, but others may not)
The additional expenses (like a computer that isn't <i>technically</i> required equipment, can be paid for from a Coverdell ESA. I usually recommend my clients have an ESA for that purpose alone, in addition to other funding accounts.
