My Will Dilemma  Reply with quote

Hello,

Is it better to leave money to siblings who I am emotionally closer to but haven't been too responsible with their finances or to siblings who I'm not that close to, but have been very responsible with their finances?

Leaving it to the ones who haven't been too responsible, would help them, but I have some reservations as it would be like rewarding them for being a slacker and penalizing those who have been responsible. Leaving it to the ones who have been responsible, however..they really don't need it.

I know the choice is entirely up to me as to what to do, but would like to hear your thoughts.

Decisions..decisions.... Wink

Thx

If you want to piss your family off and create seperation then by all means pick and choose... if you are to do this fairly you will give an equal amount to each person. What they do with it is their own choice, but at least you showed you love them all. You'll only create a bigger rift in the family if you pick your favorites. They are all family, your flesh and blood. Maybe it will help them, maybe it will end up buying a vacation, but once you give a gift, the money is no longer yours to use. Just be glad in knowing you gave each an equal amount of money and they can do what they want with it. At least they had the chance to do something good with it.

Ditto coaster.

Bum also has a good point; people get nasty about inheritences anyway.

Here's another option: donate it all to charity, save yourself and your siblings the trouble, and make it moot. Cool

I never understood why that it supposed to change anything. Being related is a happenstance beyond one's control, an incidental; why does it warrant merit to some? It only seems to be an excuse to exploit another.

You also have the option of putting assets into trust, administered by the responsible, for the benefit of the irresponsible.

Your benefit there would allow you to dictate terms of any distributions or benefits ernjoyed by the irresponsible from the trust upon conditions set forth in the trust.

Example: no cash distributions unless employed, no tution payments unless GPA is at least a 2.0 etc.

This should not be looked at as dictating from the grave, (hehe) but as a means of training, actions and rewards (good dog)

Time is our most volatile resource that if not used immediately is lost instantly
