Let's talk about the extreme case: The Mad Max scenario. As our oil production gradually slows down, our societies will tend towards this worst case.

The assumptions:

a. All internal combustion engines will be pretty much too expensive to run.
b. Money will be meaningless until it is backed by a credible, sustainable authority, which could take years to emerge - maybe even decades.
c. The resulting disruption of human society will pretty much invalidate all current authority.
d. To suit this crude scenario, we assume a, b and c to be flatly true, without considering the long slide down.

In order to find the safest, best location, you really need to know the geography of the region in which you live. Your top priorities:

1. Find a sustainable source of fresh water
2. where there is also access to a food source
3. away from crowds,
4. yet defensible
5. with a group of trusted people.

Using these guidelines you can already look at your regional map in Google Earth and begin to see potential good spots and potential death traps. Much of this wisdom is the same sort of popcorn conversation you can get from a good zombie survival flick.

AVOID PEOPLE
The authorities aren't always interested in your best outcome. Do not go to a hospital or a grocery store unless you want to fight for resources. Unless starvation is imminent, looting food is a waste of time. The energy spent opening a rusty can is better spent fashioning and testing a rusty plow, irrigation ditch, etc.

Looting hardware is always worthwhile.

Avoid cities. Rural areas provide safety. You need a team because, now, hehe, it really does take a village.

WATER AND COMPETITION
You need water and transportation is always good, so rivers are a natural first choice. But rivers, especially near population centers, will be packed with your violent competition. You don't want to be ON the river until open trade resumes in the new oil-less world. Could take a year, could take decades.

What you want is hidden ACCESS to the river. Far enough away and hidden so that your presence (lights, equipment, boats, access road) can't be seen from the river. Know that violent opportunists will cruise every inch of the river searching for signs of life to raid.

Natural springs are great temporary solutions. But they don't provide transportation, they are subject to contamination and depletion. They are great for hiding a community because almost nobody pays attention to underground sources - they aren't on most maps. Rivers are all over maps and will be the next swarm spots after the masses of urbanites finally figure out that cities mean death. The survivors of the urban places will be tough customers.

Springs that feed rivers are NOT hidden at all. It's a giant flashing sign. Not everyone knows how to read it, but the ones that DO, are NOT the ones you want surprising you in the night.

YOUR VILLAGE
You need a group of trusted, like-minded people to build your community. Groups can prepare today by purchasing cheap land situated in ideal spots. The difficult problem is knowing when and how to get everyone together. A strong argument could be posed for starting today!

NETWORK
Also, remember that survival mode is temporary. Human society, time after time has adjusted to changing eco-conditions over the last million years. So don't isolate the community. Scout and find peaceful neighbors. Trade, barter, build relationships. Rivers are great for this sort of thing. The community that establishes the best outside contacts will be able to sustain the best quality of life.

Okay, so all of that is clearly "far-out", movie-based fantasy and is an incomplete picture of the things that could be done TODAY to prepare. But by providing a worst case scenario, we can at least imagine a broad and general direction for productive preparation.

PEAK OIL.  Reply with quote

To Euler,

thanks for the post, great reply.i dont see the "far out"
"mad max" "fantasy" as all that far out.it is a worst
case outlook but any research into this subject and
its exactly what will happen.sooner or later, one way
or another,it will happen.

personally i suspect it wont be a gentle transition.i think
the opec members have "overestimated" "their" reserves.
and as anyone who has done research into this knows
that a reduction in supply of 10%-15% will be enough to
do it.its not gona be a down to the last drop thing.

peak oil has arrived,its here,NOW!

as for the rivers, ill be waiting for the smoke to clear first.
great place to be ambushed by raiders but if i make it
thru the "the great shit fight" its a good idea.
how long that will be,who knows.without fossil fuels the
earth has a"carrying capacity"of 2 billion people so you do
the math.a lot of people will need to be eliminated before
things settle down.

i live in australia and i was at a siminar last year with the
39 year old multi-millionaire peter spann who said"the
greatest favour you can do for your kids is to get them
off to chinese lessons" and he was deadly serious.

interesting stuff.i would love to here your thoughts on
asset protection.paper money will be good for getting
fires started but thats all.people in the know say gold
for obvious reasons but what type? i dont think bars
are gona be real practicle for trade/barter.you know
the old"eggs in one basket thing"

on one site they mentioned a type of u.s. gold coin
that is well known for its consistant gold content
which is pretty high.any thoughts?

and for australia?

lots of resources and unable to defend ourselves without
our "old mate" u.s.a..and they call us "the lucky country"
and with america being broke and having reached the
threshold of never being able to pay their depts and
china and india owning all the u.s. treasurey bonds i think
we are pretty much on our own.heads up western world!

if anyone wants to do research on this and i strongly
advise you do just put "peak oil"in your search engine.
[pardon the pun]

many thanks,

jim.

I assume you guys are paying Howard Dean to setup these contacts with the ME terrorists.
