In my opinion articles from directories make nice 'filler' that adds
some content and value for your visitors. But a site that uses
nothing but second-hand articles will have a hard time competing
with a site that offers unique, creative, and informative articles
that can't be found elsewhere.

Original content is better. If you're posting the same article that twenty other blogs or websites are posting, what is there to draw people to your site instead of those other sites? Or to the original article database?
Links to articles in databases can be helpful for readers, just as links to relevant newspaper articles or websites or blog posts can be helpful, but I don't rely on pre-made articles to fill my site. I write the stuff myself. If I want to build a relationship with my readers, I need to use my own writing.
On the other hand, writing articles for databases can help spread links to your website across the internet if you write very good articles for popular subjects.

For me, I don't fully depend on others' articles. Your personal articles is a bridge to let your visitors know you better. Your writing, tunes of writing, presentation and words will be your communication tools to get closer to your visitors. Once the relationship is strong, then the visitors will always come back and be your longterm advantage.

As an Internet Marketer for 5 years, I highly recommend that you USE ORIGINAL articles.
Yes, you can have some articles from other sites but it will make sense in the long run using original.
You can always get some good ghostwriters from Elance.com. A good 400 words article can cost you from $6-$10
