An Alexa ranking works by recording the frequency of visits to your site by people with the alexa toolbar installed on their computer. For this reason I do not put hardly any weight on it because there could be several people comming to your site without the toolbar installed. I don't have one.

The Alexa toolbar isn't worth worrying about to be honest. It doesn't provide accurate info for your site because anyone that knows about the web won't touch it with a barge pole.

I agree, alexa Is a waste of time to me. That's just my opinion of course.

some people base the price of the ads they are selling based on alexa ranking,
but its true, the numbers produced are rubbish, i.e. even with 1 toolbar user and a site that gets 10 page views a day it can show daily page views of over 2m a day. its the way its calculated .. see it works like this
if there 1bn web users .. and 10m alexa users .. the stats of the alexa users are interpolated to reflect 1bn users .. hence ..

The better the Alexa rank the more you can sell your web site for 
OK, reriously though - it has been speculated that some search engines
determine site's importance also by it's Alexa ranking.
On the other hand -- it's nice to show your visitors you have a high Alexa
ranking and are therefore more credible in their minds (marketing).
Alexa ranking is basically a ranking of web sites depending on the number
of pageviews/time. I'm not sure if it's measured in days, weeks or months.
I'm pretty sure it's days.

Alexa rank is important because There are many online shoppers who are still with Alexa. If you are on top of Alexa it means you are visible for all Alexa user and it is good for better traffic from Alexa.
