Hi Everyone,
Have you hear of the old Rabbit and Tortoise race story? At the end of story, tortoise won the race. Moral of that story is Rabbit is lazy and slept during the race. Although he could have win the race but ultimately he lost because of his attitude.
We told our kids this version of the story and guess what? Our kids become a "tortoise" ! Yes, our kids learnt that its good to be slow and steady and he will be reluctant to change his environment. My opinion of todays society, slow and steady wins the race. Am I right ? Probably.
I have decided to write a thread that could have change the mindset of readers here. The new version could be applicable to business thinking.
The fact of life is Rabbit outshine Tortoise naturally. Put a Rabbit to race again with Tortoise, he could have just win hundreds of metres apart from tortoise. The truth is Rabbit can never lost to a Tortoise. Here the story carries on ...
Rabbit lost that race and he went home to review what had went wrong. He knew he should not have slept under that tree. He could have just "finish-it-off" with the Tortoise in that race before he takes a nap. He is remorseful. He calls up Tortoise again that night. "Hey ! Tortoise, I want a race again tomorrow ! I will win you this time !" ,said Rabbit. Of course the happy Tortoise agrees. Tortoise won the race and he thought he could just win Rabbit again next time. No difficulty for another race.
The next day, Rabbit and Tortoise race round 2. It was a 5km straight road race. Rabbit studies the running track and knows he just need to concentrate on running as fast as he could without stopping to rest. This time Rabbit run so fast and yes, of course he wins. When he reaches the winning zone, Tortoise is only 50m away from the starting line. Rabbit cheers and celebrates with his gang that night. But poor Tortoise lost all his confident. His dreams to win Rabbit shattered in round 2. Tortoise knows he can never beat Rabbit. Thats a fact of life. Tortoise sinks into depression while Rabbit become so proud again.
One day while walking in the woods, Tortoise met wise Owl. Owl ask him,"why are you so sad?" . Tortoise told wise owl about how he could never beat Rabbit in a race again. Wise Owl laugh and said to Tortoise, "You have special skill that Rabbit and I don't have. Use that skill in the race. Be a planner of your destiny! " Then wise Owl laught again and flew away back into the long night.
Tortoise is slow in thinking. he takes 3 days 3 nights to figure out that he knows how to swim. Of course Rabbit and wise Owl can't swim. Tortoise also realise that in order for him to win Tortoise, he must be a planner of the race track. With his swimming ability, Tortoise planned a race track that has to cut across a river. He call Rabbit and schedule a competition. He told Rabbit, this time he is going to win. Of course the arrogant Rabbit laught and he goes around telling everyone about the coming race 3, inviting them to be his supporter and see how he is going to flip the tortoise on his back.
Race 3 day of Rabbit and Tortoise arrive, alot of other animals come to watch. Little beaver flagged off the race. Rabbit used the same strategy and run without stopping. Tortoise was way behind him. But when Rabbit came to the river, he thought he could just jump in and swim across. He tried, but he just can't cross. He don't have the swimming ability. He see how some animals swim, but he has never swim before. While sitting along the river and pondering how to make a cross without touching the water, Tortoise arrived. Tortoise made his way easily across the river and finally to the winning line. Here goes Tortoise won race 3. Poor angry Rabbit can old sit at the river blamming himself for not checking the race track for obsticles before the race. All animals cheers and compliment Tortoise for working smart. They laught at the arrogant Rabbit.
Rabbit lost due to his lack of dilligent check and preparation before the race. He is also over confident and underestimate the strenght of his competitor. He is lonely and his gang leaves him. Rabbit lost all his friends or supporters when he lost race 3. He is demoralised and hopeless.
Oneday, while feeding himself in the wood, Rabbit saw wise Owl on the tree. He asked wise Owl if he could win the race again. Wise Owl said this, "Why do you guys like to compete again. Could'nt you guys just cooperate and make the world a better place ?" . Wise Owl then flew away.
Rabbit thought cooperation is good but why cooperate ? He just want to win for the sense of satisfaction. He saw a man rolling a boat across the river. "Yes! I got a way now. Just get myself a floating log and I could have easily crossed the river!", said Rabbit. For the next 2 days, Rabbit was busy in wood sourcing for the lightest wood from the best tree. He got one good one and he knows its time to call Tortoise to sehedule a race 4 on same race 3 track. Happy Tortoise agreed upon hearing its the same race 3 track for the competition. Tortoise knows he is going to win again.
Race 4 days began. All animals are spectators for the race. More supporters for Tortoise than Rabbit. Little beaver flags off race 4. Rabbit ran so fast and leaving behind slow Tortoise. He follows his strategy, that is to ran fast to the river, follow by getting onto his light wooden log that was prepared before the race begins. Then he just need to paddle his way across the river with the help of the log and then continues to run to the winning line. Everything was well thought of by Rabbit.
Something happened that day. Hunters appears during race 4. The hunters are just 1km away from the riverbank shooting for preys. Hearing the gunshots, all supportors of the race escapes. Leaving behind the desperate Rabbit who is thinking only about winning,and the poor Tortoise who concentrate so much on crawling and not realising that hunters are not far away.
Rabbit put the log into the water and began to paddle. Bang!!! Gunshot from a hunter who spotted Rabbit. Rabbit got hit on his leg. He flew overboard. Tortoise arrived at this time. He saw Rabbit shouting for help in the water and hunter is coming to pick-up their reward, Tortoise swimming into the water towards Rabbit and carry Rabbit across the river and out of the water. Rabbit appreciated what Tortoise did to save his life. Hunters didn't stop pursueing their chase. Now Rabbit was hurt on his leg but he can still escape from the hunters into the woods. Rabbit carries Tortoise on his back and dashed into the woods.
They escaped from the hunters chase. Both Rabbit and Tortoise then cooperate by going to the finish line together. Tortoise on the back of rabbit touching the finish line.
Tortoise and Rabbit become friends forever after. Competitor becoming friend and cooperate for better harmony
