Stocks Soar to 17-Month Highs

By Denise Duclaux

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks jumped on Monday, driving the Dow and the S&P 500 to fresh 17-month highs after a surprisingly strong reading on the manufacturing sector lifted investors' hopes for a U.S. economic rebound.

U.S. manufacturers slowed the pace of layoffs and boosted output in October to its best level in more than 3-1/2 years, according to a report released early in the session. Separate data showed U.S. construction spending surged unexpectedly in September to a record high.

"This is consistent with the idea that the economy is moving along quite nicely," said Steve Ricchiuto, chief economist at ABN AMRO.

...

The stock market has leaped since scraping out 2003 lows in March. Data over the past few months have pointed to an improvement in the U.S. economy and companies have posted solid quarterly earnings, spurring investors to funnel money into equities.

Yeah, confidence is contaigous. I'm hearing people say the new Google IPO may herald a new, more sustainable tech rally.

But with SCO playing jackpot justice, it's hard to say if the core businesses behind a tech rally are really stable enough to support sustained growth like people may be expecting.

AT least MS is doing interesting things. (Hate their technology, Love their company) They have a hard row ahead of them though.

I'd buy some Google. Who wouldn't?

LOL @ China Caddies!

I'm not convinced the culture over there has yet embraced the raw consumerism that gives Cadillac its power. Those people are small and humble. Cadillac is the polar opposite. That IS a funny image, DQ!

Go GM!

Maybe the Caddies are for the Party Members, they are probably not as humble and probably a bit bigger (at least around the middle). Wink

what's really funny to me is about 12 years ago I had a sedan deville...I contracted out of a place that had a professional contracted detailer...he gave me some silicone spray one day and said "throw that on your leather" so I did and man did it make it look good...and slick !

when I got home my wife (who is petite) and kidz hopped in the caddy for supper and took off for chilli's...the first right hand turn I took sent everyone in the back seat to the leftside of the car and shot my wife all the way across the front seat (no console)...to my lap...

it was funny...trust me :0

stocks heading below the 9700 resistence level...

TIME TO BUY !
