TurboTax is awesome.

I've used the online and PC version, they are both fine, although the online version is slower to use.

Story time.

Once upon a time the US government thought it might be a good idea to create a free web service similar to turbotax.com for people to do their taxes online. This was a huge success...for about a day. Until turbotax pitched a fit and complained about loss of profits. So they struck a deal, the web site would remain operational, but turbotax would be in charge of keeping up the site and for advertising, or not advertising as it turned out. Just about no one has heard of this site, but I'm here to let you know that you do not have to continue to pay money, in order to pay the government money. The site is www.taxfreedom.com and is similar to turbotax.com in almost every way, except its free Exclamation

It's all personal preference. I used it one year, but I found that it took me just as long as it did to do it by hand.

The terms for the free tax service...

In 2005, did you:

1. Qualify for the federal Earned Income Credit (EIC)?

2. Earn $28,500 AGIAGI
Your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) is the amount from line 37 of Form 1040 (or line 21 of Form 1040A). It represents your gross income less allowable adjustments, such as moving expenses, IRA's and alimony paid. or less?

3. Serve as Active Duty Military Active Military Duty

* Includes Reservists and National Guard
* You must have a 2005 Form W-2 from the military

and earn less than $50,000 AGI?

Answer Yes to any of those and you qualify...

I do. Yes. Assuming you aren't just filing a 1040EZ or something terribly simple. However, buy the software instead of paying someone else...the software will teach you stuff.

There are other software companies coming in fast and cheap and they apply to all income levels. They have been around for decades but are just now getting into the online business.

GotGoalz:

If you have a simple return, then Turbo Tax is fine. I tried it for my personal income taxes and it got all messed up. I decided to invest in a professional tax program (I am registered with the IRS as a preparer). In most situations Turbo Tax is fine, but if you have anything complicated like taxable and tax free items, then you will have problems. I am not attacking Turbo Tax, but for a tax professional, it is not the answer.

Here's a list of all the IRS approved sites:
http://www.irs.gov/app/freeFile/jsp/index.jsp

be careful, though... There are rules... max AGI is normally less than 50k, and it's only free for Federal taxes... It'll cost you about $20-$30 for the state return...

As most people have said, TurboTax is a great, and easy to use program. It's designed so that idiots will be able to use it. You can get a great tax refund through it. Also, you don't need to waste money on a guy to come and do your taxes for you. As it turns out, a lot of those guys use TurboTax themselves. I recommend you use it.

The only way you can determine if Turbo Tax is easy to use or not is by trying it. There are many individuals (as well as tax professionals) who think it is the best thing going (look at the remarks the other members have made). The proof is in the testing.

I've used Turbo Tax for the past 3 or 4 years and have loved it. I've always done the online version. One nice thing is, you can go on there, do your entire tax return and decide if you like it. When ever you log out, it will save your information so you don't have to sit down and do it all at once. You do not have to pay a dime until you're actually ready to print or submit your return. If you do not trust it, try it out and see what it calculates for your return/bill, then do it via pen and paper and compare.

Like another said, you can do the "what ifs" very easily. What if I filed married jointly..what about married separate? Quick to compare. It's also nice to remind you of deductions you may not think of....it will ask about most deductions.
