I have had a dreadful experience with Home Service (GB) Limited. A plumbing and drainage insurance introduced by local water companies. For a premium of about £60 a year they will send someone out to sort out your blocked drain or burst pipe.
A note to anyone that calls them out only to discover the problem re-occurs is to be persistent. They cover you for 2 blocked drains a year, if you have two then insist that they do a camera survey. They will object and most time you call the call centre then you will get staff who are not necessarily high enough to authorise charges.
Basically you get up to £2k drainage insurance. In my own case I had a collapsed drain and the blockage could not be moved. They said they would send someone out to fix it (they authorised the job as a 3-6 - which means it is likely to cost between £300 and £600). When they turned up they said "That drain runs under a wall which you as a policy holder must remove to allow us access to the drains. The saga goes on with them eventually taking my wall down, fixing the problem then telling me that I have another problem which is likely to take my claim above the £2k threhold having now spent £800 of the £2k limit.
They then tell me the work will cost in excess of £5k and want me to spend pay £4k towards the cost. I asked for a second independent quote which they initially refused. They then agreed after the intervention of the Water Company MD. The new quote came in at £2k (ie at the claim limit) but I had already spent £800. The contractor said that there was no need to take the wall down in the first place!!! Eventually they stumped up as I threatened to take them to the small claims court etc. The incident happened in September 2003 and I received my cheque in December 2004. Maybe worth investing in a company that keeps onto money this tight?
