Looking for advice - have interview!  Reply with quote

Hey all,

I have an interview with a man who owns his own Financial Planning business on Tuesday. Him and his wife have run this business for over 17 years and he's looking for a junior associate to help him as he is grows the business. He deals with a larger network or company but I forget the name.

Now, being only him and his wife I am concerned about a few things and was wondering if anyone has any advice about what kinds of questions to ask him in the interview?

So far I am looking to ask him about insurance, base pay, commission structure, expenses, etc. You know, the obvious things. I only make about $45k per year right now and he said I may be able to start for that, plus commission. He has a plan in store for the first three years on more of a salary "plus" commission until I build my own clients. Sounds fair to me. (I did talk to him on the phone about a half hour while he explained some things)

Anyway, if anyone is in the Financial Planning or Advisor business I'd love to hear from you regarding the proper questions I need to ask! You see, I went to school for Financial Management about 15 years ago but don't do this currently for a living and I'm a tad "rusty" on the whole subject. I can learn anything and he does like that fact that I do have college education in this field, even if it's only two years.

Thanks for any advice!

p.s. Does a $45k per year salary plus commission sound good to start with considering I have no real experience in the field, just schooling many years ago? I think it does! Especially, to totally change careers.

One question that I would have is how he got your information. Were you actively looking for a job? Why did he contact you?

I guess after hearing that someone is offering something that may be too good to be true my "scam" radar starts going off. I say that it may be too good to be true because you don't have enough hard information about the items you listed to determine how good the offer is.

That being said, I think 45K is a good salary for something that you don't have too much experience doing.

No, I contacted him seeking a possible opportunity. He was not even advertising for anyone. I just send out numerous "cold" covers and attached my resume to financial firms. I had a few people interested but this individual liked what he saw and offered to meet with me.

I was just hoping someone with financial planning experience might be able to offer me some advice on what to look out for or what the important questions are to ask regarding a financial planning position. I just never worked in this industry before although I went to school for it. So, I am not sure how the compensation works for commissions. Again, I'll learn more once we meet.
