I am wondering how can money be made with a website if there are so many out there, especially when some of them are similar, how do you get ahead

The best thing that can happen to you is you find a niche market, make one of the best websites of that market, and keep it updated. Thats about all I can tell you. I can't talk too much though as I'm still yet to hit the $100 mark with my sites. Time is a very big factor though, be patient, my Strange Facts site is about a year old now and traffic is up about 1000% from what it was the first month I started it. Granted that its only about 100 a day now, if I keep that pattern, three years down the road I'll be in good shape.

I have not been able to hit the $100/month mark yet either.
Any good ideas?

Sounds like everyone needs traffic. Build content, have links in your signatures, blog, and get listed in search engines. My income skyrocketed once I finally took the search engines seriously.

I disagree. Advertising costs money. Search engines don't.

It depends on your definition of advertising. A simple link in your signiture on a forum is advertising. It may not get you as much as paid advertising but it is free. Just be creative and try to find all the free ways to advertise that you can. Minus spamming, this just makes you look like a moron who doesn't know what they are doing.

Good call Beave. I failed to think of free advertising when making my post.

Don't worry about building a website unless that's your burning desire. If you want to make money quickly, involve yourself with a company where the work is done for you like this one. wwww.falconprofits.biz
And as others say, post in forums, run ads on free advertizing sites, create your own blog, write press releases and send to free press release sites. Right now I'm experimenting on Craigslist but don't have enough feedback about its effectiveness yet.

Content rules |

Well, if you are going to make profit from ads, I can say you only one thing: "content rules!"
Add few new interesting articles every day/week, maybe purchase some advertising from SE, but most important is content. Natural links are much more important when reciprocal and other link exchanges, and they only come from good content. Don't put ads first, only when you have some traffic.
well, that's all so far, hope it helps,
Michael

Thanks, Micahel. Good advice. It's why I'm doing press releases here and there. Nothing comes back fast, but I believe the repetitive exposure will yield results.

There is a ton of competition out there but there are things you can do for free to get traffic and links:
Add content, content, and more content.
Distribute articles to other sites and newsletters.
Exchange links with similar sites.
Post in forums related to your niche.
Use Adwords to buy traffic.
Start an affiliate program and have others promote your products.

How has buying adwords worked out for you? How expensive is it? Is Google the only way to go?

The answer is
Quality , Quality , Quality
In each market the best products win
So adverdise and put yourself in searchengines etc..... is only the second steps
First be sure you have one of the best products in your market
