Tipping allows you to analyze the service and compensate accordingly. If you dont have the money leave a thank you on the reciept at a restaurant, being a sever, it was better then thinking you were stiffed.
I think most know when they should tip.

Thanks,

Why is the quality of service not included in the price of the meal?

I hate to tip eventhough I do. I have a very tight budget. Sometimes my husband and I wants to go out to a nice dinner, relax and enjoy each others company. But for a $40 meal for 2, we have to budget in an extra $8. That is alot of money and it turns me off. Especially when the restaurant is real busy and the service is not too great. I will embarass not tipping and unhappy when I do. Anyway, lately , I tend to go to buffests more oftern. It is self service and I don't have to offer a big tip if I don't want to, no guilty conscience.

we've all been there  Reply with quote

We've all had these sort of jobs, at least those of us who have worked our way up, not everyone starts as a corperate VP. When I was young and budgets were tight I begrudged tipping and kept it as close to the minimum expected as possible. Now at my ripe old age of 44 I still remember all the junk jobs I had along the way, and show my appreciation and respect by over tipping whenever it's deserved/earned, Things have gone well for me in my life so far, I'm not a millionare, but due to some planning and some luck I'm doing ok. better off than a lot of folks. call it payback for good Karma or whatever, I feel I've been fortunate and don't mind passing some extra of it along. especially if someone is doing something extra for me in the first place. If a extra couple of bucks from me helps thier day, it's good for us both right?
Tipping, like gift giving is a selfih act at its roots, you do it for the feeling and satisfaction you get from it.

unless of course it's automatically added to your bill.( which is more and more common), that I've never liked. but then the IRS taxes these folks on an estimated 10% tips wheather they actually get tipped or not. meaning if you don't tip them that they are being taxed as if you did. and it costs them to wait on you. not too cool.

and it keeps increasing ...  Reply with quote

I'm fascinated to watch how, over the years, the recommended amount for tipping in a restaurant has increased. People used to say "10-15% for good service". Then it became "at least 15%". Now I'm hearing "15-20%, and never withhold a tip, no matter how bad the service." I would much rather see them pay the waiter a normal wage and add on a service fee, or better yet just include it in the price of the meal.
