Could you live without a car? Would public transport be cheaper? I'd love to hear your views.

Yes. I could live without a car.

But, No, I would not be able to have my job or an income. So, while technically, I'd still be alive... in reality, I'd be up shit creek.

(BTW, My job involves driving to many sites everyday)

I currently live without a car. Bum alot of rides but when I do go out I stock up on supplies. Bus is about $3 per way in Southwest Florida. Considering the gas prices its cheaper depending on how far your work is. Here in London its £1 per way I believe but unleaded gas(petrol) is cheaper here as well. Something like 90p a gallon. So yes you could live without a car, ride a bike to the store, walk to the store and add a few years to your life span. But it does cut down on your social life a bit. With every advantage comes a disadvantage.

Ironicly I have AutoTrader's website open in a tab behind this one, lol.

There are some car pooling organisations around so you can share lifts with other people.

http://www.nuride.com/ is good in the US

http://www.liftshare.org/ in the UK

I could probably live without a car. I can't drive yet as i'm only 16.. and I haven't gone through drivers ed. Public Transportation would be an absolute no no to me. Think about all the other people who share the ride...think of all the diseases they could have that are contagious... if I had no car... I would bike.

I always sell custom computers and computers parts..talk to me on aim if interested.

I've lived in Denver without a car for over ten years. Of course there are places that are difficult or impossible to get to using public transportation, but part of the process for me was re-evaluating whether I really needed to visit the newest suburban mall or mega-theatre. Visiting friends is sometimes difficult, but usually when people are having a party it's easy to get someone to give me a lift to/from a light rail station.

In that cae be sure you stay out of the malls & theaters. Handwashing is #1 way to avoid picking up germs, & you are highly more likely to be touching many more things in those two places than the bus strap handle & seat back rail. Shocked Carry X-germ or some-such in your pocket & clean your hands every time you walk out of the Wal-Mart,..cuz ... have you Seen All Those Runny Nose kids in there!!! Laughing Your hands are much more dangerous to me than is your breathing - Exclamation Monk is more reality-based than what you think. Check hospitals for what sign is posted all over !!! Hospitals get demerits for NOT having those signs !!!

If people actually worked out what a car costs they might consider an alternative. Not just the payment, but insurance, the cost of a garage, parking, speeding tickets (thats just me I guess), maintenance and lets not forget gas. I figure for a mid-size Toyota in total this works out to about $10,000 a year in Seattle. Thats a lot of cabs ...

You also have massive advantages not having a car because you don't have to worry about the thing. Just take cabs.

I lived for years in Vancouver BC just taking the bus. Of course that's Canada, where everyone takes public transport.

Right now I have a beautiful old car in perfect condition, was paid off 20 years ago and costs me hardly anything to run, which is the only reason I drive. I would never buy a new car.

w/out car.  Reply with quote

I've lived with out a car my entire life. Seems like the only thing I am missing not haveing one is speeding tickets and emergency repairs that would just drive me up the wall with stress and unacounted for bills!

And now working form home too, I see no car purchase anytime in the near future.

Where I live, public transportation is limited.

However, I can try to plan better and MINIMIZE car use.

Just try to use the car less days. Smile

Is the rising oil price influencing your choices yet? If not, what price would it need to reach before it does start to influence them?
