Thoughts On Suze Orman  Reply with quote

I was watching her show a bit the other night and noticed she said she does not believe in budgets. I was wondering what she does believe in? Whats everybody's take on Suze? I was going to head over to Barnes & Noble and browse her book "The Money Book For the Young, Fabulous & Broke."

Is she just another media person who makes it sound easier than it really is?

I've listened to Suze and I think she's given out some really great advice to callers, she's definately smart.

I wonder what she meant by the budgets comment? Surely she knows that people need to set aside money for expenses and bills...

I think Suze Orman do, in deed, give out good advice. I am not sure what she meant by not believing in budgets. But I've watched a show when she appraised budgets. Maybe she meant; save a certain amount and take care of the rest of your life with the rest. Hey, who knows.....

But I like watching her show...

Well when she says that she does not believe in budgets she means that you will not be able to fix your problems with a budget in the long run. The same way that you can not maintain/fix you weight in the long run with a diet. Budgets and diets are good to achieve your goal in the short term but in order to make the change permanent you must get to the source of your problem and fix it. Change you spending habits, lower your expenses, make more money and then you don't need a budget. Does that make sense?

I've always felt that instead of a budget you should just increase your earnings, thus eliminating the need for a budget.

My problem with that approach is that as soon as I increase my earnings, I increase my spending. Rolling Eyes

Yeah, it doesn't work very well if you do that, does it?

I think, most people don't have the discipline to live on a budget. Which is totally fine, but there's going to come a time where you are going to have to start saving money. Those of us, that are making the sacrifice now is going to be better of later. I don't think we as human (at least most of us) think about 20, 30 or even 40 years down the road. Like D Hayes said, Do you really NEED those things?

Let me ask everyone a question! If someone who is (let's say) 85 years old told you, they wish they could do (life) over again financially, would you believe them? Don't be that person!!!

Please read the quote at the bottom!

LOL david...that IS funny....and true!

Key to sticking to your investing budget: Pay yourself first.

Make it your top priority: On payday, put your allotted fundage into your investment before you pay your bills, etc. Better still, have it automated. Next, pay your bills. Finally, what ever is left over is really left over.

Oh, yeah, I think Suze is pretty cool and very insightful. My only qualm w/her is her take on mortgages (puts emotion above sound financial practise on that one).

Of course I don't need lots of the stuff I buy...but what's the point in working if you can't buy stuff you want? (Within reason of course.) Reminds me of the Dr. Phil show with the couple who were in debt up to their eyeballs trying to keep up with the Joneses. It wasn't pretty.

check2check:

By all means, make sure you live happily. I am glad you said with reason, that shows you understand you don't want spend TOO much. Some people, though, like the families that be Dr. Phil don't understand the "with reason" part. It makes me sad when I see couples that are 40 - 60 still working as hard as they didn't when they were 25. That's when you ask, did I really need everything I bought for all them years!!!

Like you said, what's the point of working if you can't buy stuff. No doubt, treat yourself reasonably. Now let me ask you a question, what's the point of working if you are not working toward something?

I mean, that is what we work for right! We are working to obtain something, for some people it's for materialistic things. Those are the people you find working in walmart at the age of 52, and the likes. Me I am working for now and later. Meaning, I work to get through today as well as get to tomorrow.

I know a lot of people don't like Suze, and I admit some times she is a little over the top style wise, but I am definately a Suze junkie. I watch her show religiously, have all her books, and have her protection portfolio. I have put a link to her book selection below. Not knowing your exact circumstances, it's tough to recommend a specific book, but just a general recommendation would be "The Laws of Money, The lessons of Life".

Rolo,

can you please explain why you disagree with that? I tend to agree with Suze but I'd love to hear your side.
