It's ok but there are plenty of stories around the web where people report that PayPal froze their account without notice or explanation. I use them but don't trust them 100%. Be advised that PayPal is not a bank and do not have to abide by regular banking rules. If you decide to use PayPal, give them as little info as possible - and withdraw your earnings regularly. I would definitely advise: DO NOT leave large amounts of money sitting in PayPal.

I've heard the same things as multimastery, but I personally never had problems with paypal.

No, just like all merchant accounts, none are totally safe, and there are scammers abusing consumers all day long worldwide, so never think you are totally safe. Learn the scams being used with Paypal and then protect yourself, never tie you Paypal account to your main bank account, open a supplement and keep only the least amount in it to avoid it being wiped out which happened to me several years ago.
Not only do you have to be aware of hackers, but Paypal has full access to your account and if someone files a false claim against you which happens all the time, you give Paypal permission to debit your credit card or bank account, so read the small print, you can get burned very easily as the buyer has all the rights over sellers on eBay which uses Paypal as one in the same. Beware, your money is not your own when you open a Paypal account, so use only a debit card or low balance bank account which is required to open any Paypal account. Lesson learned, trust no one in banking.
