Credit.com Credit report Question (credit card debt?) |
|
|
I just did a free report tonight from Credit.com
I decided to do this because the last car loan I took out, my credit score was a little low than it was before and I'm not sure why. If anything, I thought it would have gone up since I've been paying on my student loans AND previous car payment since then, all on time, I have no late payments.
What I'm not sure of, is it shows Credit Card Debt. It says I have over $4,000 worth of credit card debt. I don't even HAVE a credit card, I never have. I pay everything out of my accounts or debit card. I will get a credit card just to build credit at some point, but I've been waiting for my bank to get their own so payments, etc are simplified instead of getting one from another bank.
I highly doubt someone has a card or cards in my name because I'm sure I would be hearing from credit bureaus/other collectors to pay on those. So, is this factoring in something else I'm not aware of?

Yeah, I'm sure. It says ~4400 credit debt with a limit of ~$8000
It also says something about a minimum payment of ~$100 on there, which I have no idea how that could be tied to. How could I even go about finding if someone opened a card in my name? I would to have happened, or likely happened in the last ~17 months since my credit score went down slightly. Can I get retro-active credit reports/history?

You pulled an official credit report from one of the credit reporting agencies? The report should tell you when the account was opened and have basic contact information for the bank that issued the credit. If you know that you didn't open this account, you need to make fraud reports both with the credit reporting agency and with the bank that issued the credit. Contact both immediately. If it isn't an obvious error and it appears that fraud has occurred, then you will need to pull copies of the other two major credit reports to see if this is showing up on each. The contact info for each of the major agencies is:
Equifax: 800-685-1111 (general) or 800-525-6285 (fraud); P.O. Box 740241, Atlanta, GA 30374; www.equifax.com
Experian: 888-397-3742 (general and fraud); PO Box 2002, Allen, TX 75013, www.experian.com.
TransUnion: 800-888-4213 (general) or 800-680-7289 (fraud); P.O. Box 2000, Chester, PA 19022; www.transunion.com.
When you make a fraud report with the bank that issued the credit, they may ask for a police report, in which case file the police report. The good news is that you are protected against financial liability in the case of fraud -- you aren't going to have to pay for this and the agencies are legally obligated to clean up your credit history of any fraudulent activity. The bad news is that you are going to have to do the leg work to get this fixed.
It starts with calls to the credit issuing bank and the reporting agency. Good luck.
