I've used TurboTax, H&R Block At Home and Tax Act last 3 years (2012, 2011, 2010), respectively. Prior to that, I had been using TT exclusively but was looking for a more economical version.
My benchmark was how they handle dealing with claiming dependents and credits if you are divorced. Granted, not everyone is divorced, but it's still a measure of quality of the s/w, IMHO.
Up until 2009, TT was I'd say a 3 on a scale of 1-5 based on above measure. Tax Act was awful, just awful! I could not make sense of their questions or guidance and had to resort to fill out the form directly. A give it a 1. H&R Block At Home was better than the older version of TT...gave it a 3.5 or maybe 4.
But this year's TT (for 2011 taxes) is significantly improved and I give it a 4, maybe 4.5 our of 5. Picked up the Deluxe F&S combo pak at OfficeMax for $39.95USD.
P.S. wrt a calculator... I believe TT has a function to help you calculate withholding.

i use turbo tax: feel a bit stuck in it as it has all my info already. A pain to switch out now. That being said, turbo tax was offering free federal returns this year. Haven't tried it out but heard they advertisement, must be trying to get you to buy some addons.
good luck.
