Money troubles- new to the forums  Reply with quote

Hey everyone i'm a newbie here and i'm sort of desperate help. I'm a college student and I live with parents and a sibling in a 2 bedroom apartment. we used to live in a house about 7 years ago until parental problems occured and we lost a lot of money and now my parents have jobs that don't pay as good anymore. Apparently were in debt of a lot of money since my dad was scammed out of a Jack In the Box business so he has to pay it off and he tells me its hard to make money now and told me that we may not have money for me to continue college, which is bad news for me. Now your probably wondering Why am i not working? well i used to about 2 years ago until i lost my job and then i came down with an illness, a panic disorder, which leaves me with anxiety and such and its so bad that I can't even leave the house for long distances so i can't goto inclasses anymore i have to take online classes and i can't even goto a job. Heck i can't even get into a car because I get major anxiety. its been a tough few years and now its taking a toll. So now i'm looking in way to get some aid or something. i've tried disability but they wouldn't give me any and financial aid hasn't seem to respond to my last submition. So now i'm asking is there any programs, or aids, or anything we could sign up for to help us a little? sorry if this is placed in the wrong thread

I would look at the mental health issue first. What you are describing could be considered a disabling condition.

I imagine that you have seen a doctor/psychiatrist.
Hopefully you have medication to help alleviate the symptoms.

College isn't for everyone. What is the job that it is preparing you for? Would your condition prevent you from doing this job as well? Look beyond college to the job that you want.

You might be best served to drop out of college and explore the jobs around you a little further.

Since the disability benefit is based on earnings history, there's no point in a college student trying to get it.

Yeah I have seen a doctor and psychiatrist and have been prescribed prozac for it, but not all symptoms are stopping just some. I'm trying to transfer later and pursue a business degree in probably management so thats probably the job i'm preparing for. I also try to apply for disability about 2 months after I got diagnosed with a panic disorder and they said i'm unable to recieve anything because apparently my condition isn't as severe as i can do normal things. I've heard from other sources that the only way I could recieve benefits if I had schizophrenia...which i don't

What I'm saying is that since the amount of the disability benefit is based on earnings history, if you don't have the earnings history, you won't get anything for a benefit. It doesn't have any bearing on whether you're disabled or not.

Disability before age 22, you could draw against your parent's social security and it wont effect their benefit at all. You may need a lawyer.

Ah, thanks eastman; I didn't know that. amalik91, that might be an option for you. Actually, the people at the Social Security office are obligated to help you understand the process. I suggest you give them another visit and ask them to explain this provision to you.
