I agree that tags are still significant these days. When it comes to content, must be unique and original or else google will just snub you. In order to be sure maximize the presence of title tags, meta tags and other on page optimization you can do. No one really knows what google wants so it's best to do everything that can be beneficial to your website.

Pay attention to the content and usability, and then the customers will like your page and stay. SEO is not the only factor - high bounce rates may destroy all success achieved. I believe, better 10 good customers a week, than 10000 "bouncers".

I agree with you that Google doesn't read Meta keywords but I suggest to use it because other search engines read it.
