| Best Side Job around! |
|
|
Ive always played sports and loved sports my whole life. Now the best side job I started 3 years ago. Umpiring baseball!, Which lead to reffing volleyball. I started off making 48$ a game (2 hour time limits) and the game rarely went the 2 hours!. Now i Ump a higher level and am bringing in 75$ a game!. Leagues are always looking for umps and its a "make your own schedule" type of job. They offer you games every week or month and you either accept them of decline them. If anyone is looking to make some extra cash I would suggest looking into Umping or reffing any sport, Its easy and fun.

I wish I got paid for umping and reffing this forum.
Sounds like a great suggestion, though. I knew a co-worker a long time ago who did that part-time in semi-pro hockey around here. But of course, he grew up in Minnesota, and it's almost mandatory to play hockey there.

This seems like an amazing arrangement, you get to do something you love and get paid for it. Do they require you to do a certain amount of games per season, or it's up to you to take the job whenever you want?

Nope its a schedule online and when the season starts theyll offer you about 20-30 games.. You click "accept" or "deny" So you can work 5 games or 30 games depending on what you want. Then just check it every few days and more games will get offered as rain outs and what not happen. You will also get alot of calls asking you to work that night, say if someone calls out. Theres no commitment until you say you accept the game. I mean thats how the association i work for does it, it may very from different leagues.
Also I wouldn't say I LOVE it haha but its a totally different aspect of watch the game, When they hit a grounder to 3rd base you dont watch him field the ball you turn and get in position and focus on first base and wait for the ball to come. It can be a good time but if the teams are bad or have poor attitudes it gets annoying but easy money none the less. The best part about it is, Your call is ALWAYS right, as long as you know the rules.

How I wish I myself can also do the same thing like you, doing what I love for pleasure as I get paid. I think this opportunities are really only for selected people. You are truly gifted. With this, all you have to do is save the money, and you are on your way to your future with more security.

Yah, Well you have to have the right attitude. Im 23, When a 40 year old mom starts yelling at me about the call I find that to be the best part. Some umps really let it bother them though, but the way I see it, if they think im "fixing" some 12-14 eyar old baseball game, they have bigger problems then me!

I have an idea about your job. Being an umpire is no easy job. You will be the one to be blamed. Losers most often blame the umpire while the winner gets the credit for being good. There is nothing you gain except the love for the game, and of course, the money you get out of the salary. You just have to have the patience for it.

I believe that the discipline and the dedication of the players towards their respective sport should also be the same kind of discipline and dedication to be employed by the umpire for his craft. It is no easy task, but it will sure pay off.

Well said. Everyone hates it when a flubbed call changes the momentum and/or the outcome of a game.

LOL I got forced into sports as a kid. My dad would manipulate me into giving it a try. Then if you quit you were a loser. I could ump for the money but I wouldn't enjoy it one bit.
I totally prefer the Lotto Club as a side deal. Wouldn't want to be stressed about making sales.
But it is fun to sell when I get the bug. Most of the time I just do it turn key. The closest thing I have to a sales line is "I don't want to give you a sales line but I do recommend that you get a free info pack and make an informed decision"

Everybody has different interests and likes and dislikes. A job that is great for one person may not be so great for another.
