Two completely different products. Mutual funds are for building wealth, annuities are life insurance products (and poor ones at that ).

Maybe I could put it a little broader: you're asking for a comparison between a wealth-accumulation phase and a wealth to income generation phase. Fixed annuities may or may not have a life insurance component, depending on the terms of the payout, but they are always an income-producing product, not a wealth-building product.
