IRA - Mutual Fund Company Comparison?  Reply with quote

Hi,

I have to roll my 401(k) into an outside IRA. Almost certainly, I will invest with one of the big mutual fund companies - T. Rowe Price, Vanguard, or Fidelity.
Do you know how the funds of one company compare to those of the other two? I've recently read somewhere that one of the three has better-quality funds.
I'm 25 and looking to move approx. 8K.
Aside: How do you feel about lifecycle funds compared to setting up on my own?
Thank you.

Morningstar.com  Reply with quote

Morningstar.com is a helpful online resource for comparing mutual funds. Over time, managed funds don't do any better than index funds, and index funds have the lowest management fees. Consider a comparison based on kindness to account holders, such as (1) permitted frequency of in-and-out trading without penalty; (2) minimum balance requirements and quarterly maintenance charges; and (3) checkwriting privileges.

Checkwriting.  Reply with quote

Scratch checkwriting as a basis for comparison in the case of an IRA.
