I feel so bad for all of the tsunami victims in Japan. Do you think the disaster in Japan will hurt the world economy long term?

Let's look at all the disasters we have had in the last 12 months or so. Australia with it's fire, Haiti with it's earth quakes, the U.S. with it's blizzards and floods, New Zealand with it's earth quakes and on and on.

None of this has had anymore negative effect then Japan will have. The world seems to adjust to all these things very quickly so long term this Japan event is just another happening. Very Happy

It's really a tragic. Radiation risks and its leakage into its water systems are grave concerns.

No doubt re-building tend to boost the economy after a disaster; but the scars of disasters and environmental concerns will be issues which the Japs & its government that will have to face for a long time.

The nuclear issue could really hurt the economy in the long-term but Japan bounces back very quickly due to sheer entrepreneurship -- if they are in the gutter for a bit, don't fret, they will get out rather quickly

We're already seeing the markets slightly recover from the dip after the Japan crisis. I think since Japan is such an affluent country, it'll rebuild and just boost the global economy. I wish I had money right now to invest in different companies that will likely be suppliers to the rebuilding of Japan.

I really hope that they get the Nuclear situation under control. As for the recovery from the earthquake/tsunami, Japan is a productive country and will work their way out of trouble.

Japan will be affected more with this, They need atleast two years to re build. World economy got small effect in the tsunami time but its a short term effect. While considering loan term it will be negligible.

Listening to NPR today I heard a piece about fish and seaweed contamination. I was wondering if anyone knows more about the policies and procedures in place in the US for domestic fish and imported fish that are designed to protect consumers? What types of testing do we have in place?

I've heard there are bans on certain Japanese exports. And the Japanese government has outlawed planting rice in radioactive soil. I imagine a lot of countries will restrict food imports from Japan.

I was also sad to hear about the recent earthquake/very strong after shock they had recently.

I agree Japan has a good work ethic. It's still sad to see the nuclear crisis continuing.
