According to an advert in a old Busisness Week 2004 not real old.
Word of mouth is still the best advert. Car companies it said are the leading advert spending and they spend the most on TV. Yet, people state that the opinion of a friend or relitave will have more effect on their purchace then a TV comercial.
Is world of mouth still the best?
Avon is probably the biggest MLM/network marketing company.
Do they move the most product?
You lose a little credibility when you pay for a plug.
And there was a time when Watkins was massive.
Who will be the next big MLM?

Hi Lottomagic,
I do think word of mouth is still the best. The reason is if you are referred to a product or company by someone you trust then they are more likely to buy a higher dollar amount and become a repeat customer if the company lives up to your recommendation. I've seen it over and over again. It really does work the best.
An example would be my curren endevour, Empowerism. I have an ever growing contact list of people that trust me to recommend solid opportunites. Sending an email or calling those on my list works far better than any other kind of marketing. The rub lies in building a solid list of folks who you know will trust you and take your advice. This can also backfire if you are one who jumps on every new wagon that comes to town and your list of folks get burnt.

Word of mouth work and is good But is not the Best
Most Inc Big companies work more on Ads than work of mouth.
They become successful because of the ads and the way they sell.
Just my 2 cents.

I was reviewing a few viral marketing service and came accross something pretty intresting called WideCircles. They seem to work by sending viral messages to various websites like forums, blogs, wiki's and so on. My friend signed up for the account the other day after running a small but successful campaign ( targeting very specific niche ) and told me about it. It seems like a nice idea to gather highly relevant traffic and help with the SEO process at the same time while paying very small amount of money compared to pay per click. In any case, I am going to give them a try today. In case you are intrested here is the site. http://widecircles.com?imt=3
