On Monday I stumbled in Skype’s big block over an accusation that Skype seems to be in serious violation of patents and that lawsuits are pending.
I quote:
“Is Skype in trouble!?
I have been informed through reliable inside sources that Skype has been accused to be in serious violation of patents while using their basis technology and that lawsuits are pending.
On January 27th based on a search warrant a lot of documents have been confiscated at Skype’s headquarter in Luxembourg with regard to the accusations made. The evaluation of this material is supposed to take months.
Is this eventually the real reason for postponing Skype’s going public from the beginning of 2011 to a later day?”
After only 24h it went of the air before anyone could comment on it.
Erased by Skype itself?
I am wondering if this is true and a settlement can’t be reached with the owner of the patents or the lawsuits are lost could this endanger their business model.
Has the SEC been informed?
Does anybody have any background information?

oh, i've never heard about this news. I've been using Skype for some time now and i didn't encounter any problems.

It’s not a question of MISinformation!!
I stumbled by accident in Skype’s forum over this entry by someone named “informer” since I am currently screening several blogs from companies planning to go public. My interest is seeking out possible stock opportunities.
What got me curious in this case, was that this comment went of the air within 24h without being commented either by third parties (who barely would have had the time!) or by Skype itself.
If the content wasn’t true wouldn’t it be simpler for Skype to just put a statement up denouncing the search or the violation of patents?
Just erasing it from the blog made me suspicious!
Where it smokes there is fire!!
I was wondering if anybody else has heard anything about this problem.
If not may be it’s better to confront Skype directly or ask some journalists!

Well, I think that they better sort this one out fast. Sadly, Skype is getting into a few big snags in the last few months, which is worrying.

I have not heard of this news either. Skype has been very useful to me for contacting online business associates not to mention my family too. It would be sad to see it go down or close. Hopeful not.

I hope it is not true though, I have been using skype since ages. I like it more that any other IMs. Plus I get to call overseas landlines and mobiles too. It will be hard to find other.

Skype was at the center of a bidding battle between Microsoft and Facebook. I don't think two established companies would miss such a possible lawsuit in their due diligence. If it's true, then it probably isn't a big deal. Otherwise, it might just be a rumor.
Also, lawsuits typically pop up when companies start succeeding because people look for excuses to jump in on success, even when they haven't earned it.
