How do you make ends meet?  Reply with quote

How do you make ends meet? Does your primary job cover all the bills? Are you working a second job? Or making money in other ways?

I make my living outside of the home and use eBay, and other online money making sites.

Diversified - As the old saying goes, "Don't put all of your eggs in one basket." Nowhere is this truer than when building an investment portfolio. These funds are popular because they allow investors to spread their risk over many different companies and industries, which minimize the fallout when any one particular company or industry suffers losses.

Thanks for replying Michigan.

camey123: I agree with you totally about not putting all of your eggs in one basket. Having multiple ways to earn is always best.

There isn't a lot of security in corporate America anymore...there never really was. You need to protect yourself by having something to fall back on. Think about your current job and ask yourself what you would be doing if you didn't have your current job.
Maybe you could develop something part time for now and see how it goes. Protect yourself with something to fall back on. Things change very quickly and trying to live on unemployment compensation is impossible today.

I'm always looking for ways to make ends meet. I have resorted, before, to going door to door and asking for any kind of work. It's no fun.

RichS is very right. Have something to fall back on. I can fall back on my electrical construction. . . for you it might be you're great massage skills. But to the reader. . . I really do advise having something.

Historically, there was more security back in the 1940's and 50's. Probably in the 60's and 70's too. It seems job security really started to erode in the 80's and has continued to get worse. Companies were loyal to their employees years back, but unfortunately those days seem to be long gone (at least for the most part).

There is no loyalty in corporate America today. I am working for a corporation now, but I think it is good to have a skill you can fall back on.

I've worked for a state university for nearly 30 years. I would be eligible for retirement this year but I plan on staying at least another 5-6 years. I should be out of debt by then & have my house paid for (or nearly paid for) by then.

As a staff member, we are not paid as well as faculty members and many of us work 2nd or 3rd jobs in order to make ends meet. I started working part-time retail in 1993. I had planned on working 1 year but it has turned into 18 years. I also realized that I would never be able to afford a house if I didn't keep that 2nd job. Even though it's hard to be gone so many evenings, I'm glad I have kept that 2nd job. Little did I know then that the economy would become so bad in the last several years & that I would not get another raise at my day job for 3 years.

I also did not plan on acquiring more credit card debt, but like a lot of people, you use it because it's easy and you don't realize how much you are spending. I fell into that trap as well. Now, I'm having to climb back out of debt and don't see myself being able to quit the 2nd job until the debt is paid off. So, as long as I'm able, I plan on keeping the 2nd job. Also, when I do retire, I would still be young enough to find another day job and have the option of quitting the 2nd job while still drawing my retirement.

In addition to being on the debt management program, I also changed my cable options so I'm paying $30 a month instead of $45. I also changed my phone long distance plan so I'm not paying a flat fee for long distance calls that I seldom ever make. The phone company had another plan that was cheaper & more suited for me. So, it pays to ask what plans your phone or cable company has because they can change.

My first question would be, are you honest about your budget? Second, are you living within your means? If you aren't bringing in enough money, it's time for a second job. I delivered pizza's, cut lawn, did computer work, etc.... Whatever it takes.

I work at W-Mart 20-22 hours per week. I've gotten raises every single year & even a merit raise one time (back when they gave those). There are many nights that I do not want to be there, but I've also made some of my closest friends through that job, so besides the extra money, I have had some other perks w/the job.

Cutting off from the wants and just focusing on the needs is a way to start to make ends meet. Eating out on a regular basis.. daily is already very pricey at this rate. If people would try home cooking it will save us much.
